Undiscovered destinations for city breaks and holidays

If you’re tired of the same city breaks and same old beach resorts and you’re looking for somewhere different to book a low cost flight, then why not consider one of our top choices for an unusual city break or short break holiday.

France
– not the most obvious of countries when you think of low cost flights, however you can find cheap flights to airports in all part s of the country.

Fly to Poitiers, Limoges, Angouleme, La Rochelle or Bergerac, all within the central area of France. They all act as gateways to wine regions and can provide you with a quick getaway or the base for a longer summer holiday.

Head south to Biarritz near the Spanish border, or to Pau, Lourdes, Carcassonne or Beziers, strung along the border with the Pyrenees and offering history and dramatic scenery. And while we all know Nice as one of the low cost capitals, then finding a flight to Marseille is easy and a great alternative to the Cote d’Azur. You can even make a quick getaway by ferry to the relatively undiscovered Corsica.

If you’re after ski then Chambery, Lyons and Grenoble all feature as gateways and there are seasonal cheap flights to the Alps with many operators. The most extensive flight networks to France are with Ryanair, flybe and Jet2 as well as regular flights with easyJet.

Germany – its not all Christmas markets in Germany, there is so much to offer on a weekend break and booking a cheap flight to one of Germany’s many cities is a great way to start exploring.
Central Germany offers destinations such as Frankfurt, Cologne and Dusseldorf, big cities with great shopping and art and you can find flights to these destinations as well as Dortmund and Weeze.

Northern Germany offers Berlin – the capital, however interesting weekends can be spent in cities such as Bremen, Hamburg and Dortmund.Southern Germany is dominated by flights to Munich, sitting squarely in the heart of Bavaria, packed full of history and beer. Alternatively fly into Memmingen or Friedrichshafen.
Fly to Germany with Ryanair, Easyjet or Jet 2 as well as flybe.

Italy – From the chic north to the Mediterranean charms of the south, Italy has plenty of arrival points to choose from.

Whilst Rome, Venice, Pisa and Milan see all the tourist crowds, why not try a cheap flight to Rimini for beaches and San Marino, Perugia, an historic university town, or Bari, Brindisi, Pescara or Ancona along the Adriatic coast. Lamezia is another gateway, this one being to the far bottom of the country and its isolated beaches and mountains.

Or are you an opera buff? Then consider flights to Verona and watch a performance at the open air Roman amphitheatre.

Mediterranean Islands – forget the Balearics. Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza may well have low cost flights galore, but it is the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica, Cyprus and Malta that are the places to go low cost. (Although a long weekend in the city of Palma on Majorca makes a great city break).

Corsica is a French gem with regular low cost flights to Figari, Bastia and Ajaccio. It offers the Med without the crowds of tourists, although it can get very busy in the summer months.

South of Corsica, you will find Sardinia, an Italian island packed with beaches and mountains, luxury to camping with low cost flights operating in to Alghero, Cagliari and Olbia.

Sicily may well be known for its mafia connections; however it is a fantastic place to visit for a quick weekend break or a full holiday. Flights to Palermo, Trapani or Catania can all be used as the basis for a city break in their chic towns or grab a cheap car hire and explore the fabulous scenery.

Malta has close links to the UK and was used as a naval base for years by the British. Valletta makes a great base for a short break and its old town and fortifications are well worth exploring. Fly to the Med with Ryanair, Easyjet, Jet2 and thomsonfly.

And of course Cyprus draws in Brits on flights to Paphos and Larnaca for you to enjoy the fantastic walking in the Troodos Mountains of trips into Nicosia to cross the border with Turkish controlled Northern Cyprus.

– now open for business with low cost carriers. A flight to Morocco is just the start of an amazing adventure in this north African country infused with berber culture and Arabian influences.

Marrakech, Agadir and Tangier all now have low cost flights from the UK. You can lie on the golden beaches or find bargains in the bazaars. Explore the Atlas Mountains and trek in scenic surroundings. Fly to Morocco with easyJet, Ryanair, Atlasjet or thomsonfly.

Krakow or Katowice in Poland for a warm welcome, beautiful historic buildings and market squares.

Bilbao in Spain for the Guggenheim, regenerated city and superb food. Santander in Spain for beaches and mountain scenery.

Santiago de Compostela or Asturias for North West Spain – a green and verdant region full of history and culture.

Porto in Portugal for port wine, the Douro River and an old city full of charm.
