Overall Winner of Capture the Colour – JohnnyVagabond’s The Ganges at Varanasi
Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the overall winner of TravelSupermarket’s Capture the Colour PhotoBlogging Competition is JohnnyVagabond.com (real name Wes Nations!) with this fabulous shot of “The Ganges at Varanasi”.
Alongside Wes’ iPad prize for winning the red category with this same photograph, he also picks up the overall grand prize of £2,000. As anybody following the competition will know, the judges needed an extension to the announcing date because the selection process was proving very difficult indeed. However, Ken, Christine, Abi, Daniel and Dave&Deb persisted, shortlisted their favourites and after much consideration we chose JohnnyVagabond’s red entry as the overall winner. In addition to the “The Ganges at Varanasi” being a brilliant embodiment of a photographer ‘capturing a colour’ in a travel context, the four other images that Wes submitted in his post were also of a very high quality, his captions accompanying the images also helped set the scene and therefore well justified as Overall Winner of Capture the Colour. The colour category iPad winners have already been announced – read more about each category and the judges comments on this blog post reviewing category winners.
Since launching on July 4th, Capture the Colour has been warmly recieved by the travel blogging community and has seen hundreds of entries submitted of a very high standard. So, to reflect the general quality (which you can see for yourselves on our TravelSupermarket pinterest boards) and to emphasise just how close the judging was for the overall prize winner, I’m giving out 2nd and 3rd place prizes of £250 and £100 respectively. Without further ado, drum roll and nervy anticipation, here are the silver and bronze photographers!
In 2nd place overall, and a very close 2nd to Mr Vagabond I might add, is this photo by Edith Levy of an Italian Vignette, full of ‘yellow’ warmth and technically superb. The photo creates such an inviting, glowing aura that it makes you want to pop into the shop and chat to the owner! The judges loved this photo so much it definitely warranted a 2nd place reward of £250. Here’s the extract from Edith’s original capture the colour post:
“For the color “yellow” I choose this image taken in Florence, Italy for its rich and warm tones of yellow. I call this an Italian Vignette and you can see the original post here.”
In 3rd place is this ‘in the moment’ shot of a young chap leaping into very green waters in Fatehpur Sikhri, India. A few of Anthon Jackson’s shot’s kept coming up in the judges choices for the overall category and therefore deemed another worthy choice for 3rd place overall. Here’s the extract from Anthon’s original capture the colour blog post:
“Boys launch themselves into the pools of the Mughal-built Fatehpur Sikhri, just an hour’s bus ride from Agra. These pools were once reserved for royalty, but green as they’ve become with algae, they now serve local boys as an ideal place to cool off in the Indian summer. Dripping wet, these boys enjoyed seeing their photos on my camera, which I struggled to keep dry.”
Anthon’s talent as a photographer is showcased further on his other website http://anthonjackson.com/. Well worth a look, there’s some exceptional imagery on both of his sites.
So that wraps up TravelSupermarket’s Capture the Colour Competition. As hosts of the competition, we’ve been very pleased with the uptake from the blogging community and enjoyed reading and logging every entry, pinning them and I’d also like to point out that we actually feel a tad humbled at the volume of people who took the time to compose a blog post. Many, many thanks to everybody that entered and made Capture the Colour a success. Happy blogging folks and keep capturing those colours!
