  • Make a budget – work out how much you need for your trip and stick to it
  • Take a mix of financial options, some cash, money loaded onto a pre-paid card as well as debit and credit cards for back up
  • Shop around for the best exchange rates on your cash – buying online with home delivery is the best value option proven time after time
  • Always get a mix of notes, from small to large so you have some cash on arrival
  • Short of time? Use Travelex or Thomas Cook for internet deals with the convenience of airport pick up
  • Take out a pre-paid card for added security and convenience and load before you travel
  • Never use your pre-paid card as a card guarantee at hotel or car hire check in – it blocks your card
  • Only use travellers cheques as a back up or if travelling to the USA and Canada – a pre-paid card is still a better deal here
  • Check out the charges your bank or card issuer make for using your debit or credit card abroad before you travel – don’t get stung with high charges
  • Apply for a credit card specifically for overseas usage to get market leading exchange rates, no charges and Consumer Protection when spending over £100
  • Never accept the option to pay in sterling on your card when abroad. Always pay in the local currency to avoid the dynamic currency conversion rip off
