The town of Roskilde has a rich Viking heritage but this sleepy little Danish town has become more known in recent times for being the home of one of the biggest rock festivals in Europe. The festival takes place in the last weekend of June and attracts close to 100,000 people, over the years the festival has played host to a wide variety of bands and artists - from Bob Marley to Coldplay.

Including Roskilde car hire as part of your road trip across Denmark gives you the chance to explore the picturesque Scandinavian landscape. It's possible to stroll over ancient Viking battlegrounds in locations such as Lejre or for the less historically minded take a boat trip to view the cities' spectacular fjord.

Take a drive outside Roskilde to explore the countryside and a plethora of Viking sites - including the Vildtbane Stone and the newly opened Gudernes Straede path, which runs for 45km and has a number of Viking sites along the way.

Head east from Roskilde and you can take the ferry over to Sweden as part of a European road trip - ferry journeys usually take about 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a hire car and take in the splendour of the Oresund Bridge 7,845m long - which connects the cities of Copenhagen and Malmo. Car hire is widely available from Copenhagen airport, which is 18 miles from the Roskilde municipality.
