A temple in Karachi

Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and used to be the capital city. Today, it is the financial capital and a busy, cosmopolitan city located along the coastline of the Arabian Sea. As well as being a hub for banking, shipping, entertainment and culture, it also boasts some of Pakistan's most popular locations and attractions, including Clifton Beach, Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum and museum, the Planetarium and some stunning Anglo-Indian architecture.

Karachi has a mild climate but the best time of year to visit is between November and March, when humidity is low and temperatures are between 20 and 30 degrees centigrade. Most of the major airlines will come into the Jinnah International Airport (KHI), the largest airport in Pakistan. From here, Karachi car hire is an excellent option for travelling around the areas surrounding the city itself. However, as Karachi is a busy and crowded city, you may be more comfortable using taxis or an auto rickshaw.

While in Karachi, you should make sure you visit some of its outstanding historical and cultural institutions, such as the National Museum of Pakistan, Mohatta Palace and Quaid-E-Azam'a Mausoleum, the tomb of the founder of Pakistan. After a few days in the city, it is a good idea to explore further afield. A trip to Thatta, just 60 miles from Karachi is worthwhile. This historical city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and full of monuments, shrines and mosques. The Haleji Lake Wildlife Sanctury is also a beautiful place to visit.

If you are exploring the regions outside Karachi in a hire car, the journey is made easier with the Super Highway and RCD Highway. The Super Highway connects Hyderabad and Karachi and the RCD Highway links Karachi and Quetta.
