Rocky beach and cliffs in Faro, Portugal

Compare the best Faro car hire

There are many reasons that millions of people visit Faro and the Algarve each year - the abundance of immaculate beaches, the magnificent Moorish heritage, the lively nightlife, the great food, and the long hours of sunshine year round. Most likely, it's a combination of all of the above.

Why go?

Car hire in Faro allows you to explore the region and its charms, from cities to mountain villages and, of course, the stunning coastline...

Picturesque fishing villages, beautiful beaches, the harbour town of Portimao, spa breaks in the Monchique Mountain region, the nation's best golf courses, and charming Sagres, where Cabo San Vicente (Cape St Vincent) marks what was once thought to be the most westerly point of the world (before Christopher Colombus changed that way of thinking) are just the start.

The beaches and bars of Albufeira mark it as a popular Algarve destination. The journey time of 45 minutes from Faro Airport (FAO) makes car hire an attractive alternative to shelling out for taxis, even if you're not planning on exploring what the region has to offer.

The inclination towards going it alone and booking self-catering villa and apartment holidays in this part of the world means that in Faro, car hire is both useful and popular.

Other favoured destinations include Quinta do Lago, Quarteria, stylish Vilamoura, Carvoeiro, Vila do Bispo, the huge cliff-backed beaches of Praia da Rocha, and the city of Lagos.

The Algarve also acts as a magnet for golf lovers and golfing holidays are hugely popular here, with enough golf courses to shake a 9-iron at.

Arranging to collect your car at the airport in Faro will save on the expense of transfers to your final destination in the Algarve, which is an area of about 2,000 square miles. It can also cut the costs of travelling to a host of attractions around the Algarve, such as water parks including Aqualand, near Alcantarilha, and Aquashow, near Quarteira, and marine parks including Zoomarine, near Albufeira.

In Portugal, all driving is on the right-hand side of the road.

A full British licence is needed to rent a vehicle, with both paper and photo licence required at the rental desk along with a credit card for a deposit. Your driving licence should be kept with you at all times when driving.

Before driving off from your rental location, ensure you have a full set of safety gear in the car, including a reflective jacket, warning triangle, spare tyre and replacement bulbs for your lights. These are all legal requirements.

Child seats and seat belts are compulsory and drink driving rules are tougher than in the UK so ensure you have nothing to drink at all to be on the safe side.

The main A22 motorway that runs from east to west along the coast is a toll road. Ensure you have change for the toll booths.
