Oviedo Church of San Miguel

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias principality in northern Spain. It's also the administrative and commercial heart of the region and known for the Prince of Asturias Awards, which it holds each year in the Campoamor Theatre. The event is hugely prestigious, with people such as Bob Dylan and Al Gore previously attending.

Most travellers arrive at Asturias Airport (OVD), also known as Oviedo OVD of Asturias, which is located around 47km from Oviedo itself. When travelling on to Oviedo, car hire is ideal for flexibility and to see as much of the region as possible..

A hire car will allow you to go and see the coastline of Costa Verde - the Green Coast - between Galicia and Bilbaor, the Picos de Europa Mountains and the Bay of Biscay. It's also worth taking a trip to nearby Gijon, Aviles, Cangas de Onis and Covadonga. Ideally, look for a rental car that will serve you as well on rougher terrain as it will in the city, so you can explore all parts of this diverse region.

In Oviedo itself, you can discover the historic city quarter by foot and admire the medieval architecture and artefacts. Some famous monuments here have been given UNESCO World Heritage Status, such as the San Miguel de Lillo, the Cathedral, the Santa Maria del Narunco and various others.

Alongside the ancient artefacts, however, lives a thriving and busy city with many modern attractions and a fantastic food and cafe culture. Spring, summer and autumn are great times to visit, although high summer can be too hot for some. There is plenty of well-priced accommodation available, particularly outside of the school holidays and peak season.
