Stockholm is Scandinavia's Venice. Located at the point where the Baltic Sea meets Lake Malaren, it combines history and modernity in a waterfront setting.

Why go?

Stockholm car hire enables visitors to get around this island metropolis with ease, as well as for touring nearby areas...

When you fly to Stockholm, you can always be sure that the airport will be open. The home of Volvo and ABBA, Sweden deals efficiently with all weathers. Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is the city's main airport, with Stockholm Vasteras (NYO) and Stockholm Skavsta (VST), both 62 miles from the capital, serving budget airlines.

Stockholm car hire is a good option for travel from the outlying airports to Stockholm and other neighbouring cities. The centre of Stockholm boasts some fantastic areas to visit such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan), the Royal Palace, the Parliament Upper House (Riddarhuset) around the shores of Lake Malaren and the Stadhus (city hall). Another route is along the handsome Strandvagen to the elegant Ostermalm, which has wonderful Art Nouveau buildings and churches. Follow through to the Moderna Museet and through the park, Djurgarten, to the open-air museum and zoo, Skansen and the Vasa warship museum.

Explore the best places outside Stockholm's city centre, such as Sodermalm for shopping, to hang out in a fashionable bar, or alternatively visit the royal summer palace, Drottningholm Castle, for the summer opera season and open-air plays in the surrounding park.

To find cheap Stockholm car rental, be sure to book in advance to make the biggest savings. When you pre-book online you can also select the best options for you, such as car type and the most convenient collection point. You can pick your rental vehicle up from one of the airports or at a location in downtown Stockholm - the latter option is ideal if you want to explore the central areas on foot for a few days before setting off by car to see more of Sweden.

Where to explore?

When you book car rental, Stockholm breaks can be about more than just the handful of central islands. Find out where else you should go...

Vaxholm, the gateway to the Stockholm Archipelago of 24,000 islands, is just a seven-mile drive from the capital along modern roads. Visit in June for the countryside and bathing in the seas and lakes, or January for cross-country skiing in sunshine. It takes 45 minutes to reach Vaxholm by road from Stockholm and from there the possibilities for adventure are endless. Many of the islands are connected by bridges or ferries and it is simply impossible not to be wowed by this Milky-Way-like sprawl of rocky outcrops that make up the archipelago. You can surf, swim, kayak, camp, get close to wildlife or simply take a gastronomic tour of this unique part of Sweden.

Drive out of Stockholm to Vaxholm or further to the old city of Sigtuna on the shores of Lake Malaren, 25 miles north of Stockholm. At an hour's drive, this is an easy day trip from Stockholm. It is Sweden's oldest city and just picture-perfect on a sunny day.

The university city of Uppsala is 39 miles away, with journeys by car taking a little over an hour. There's a relaxed urban buzz about this place that is totally charming. Families love Uppsala for the many child-friendly attractions, parks and the Fyrishov water park.

Wherever you drive in Sweden, take care to avoid hitting a wandering moose!
