An image of Stockholm's waterfront

Stockholm is Scandinavia's Venice. Located at the point where the Baltic Sea meets Lake Malaren, it combines history and modernity in a waterfront setting. Vaxholm, the gateway to the Stockholm Archipelago of 24,000 islands is just an 11-kilometre drive from the capital along modern roads. Visit in June for the countryside and bathing in the seas and lakes, or January for cross-country skiing in sunshine.

When you fly to Stockholm, you can always be sure that the airport will be open. The home of Volvo and ABBA, Sweden deals efficiently with all weathers. Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is the city's main airport, with Stockholm Vasteras (NYO) and Stockholm Skavsta (VST), both 100 km from the capital, serving budget airlines.

Stockholm car hire is a good option for travel from the outlying airports to Stockholm and other neighbouring cities.  The centre of Stockholm boasts some fantastic areas to visit such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan), the Royal Palace, the Parliament Upper House (Riddarhuset) around the shores of Lake Malaren and the Stadhus (city hall). Another route is along the handsome Strandvagen to the elegant Ostermalm, which has wonderful Art Nouveau buildings and churches. Follow through to the Moderna Museet and through the park, Djurgarten, to the open-air museum and zoo, Skansen and the Vasa warship museum.

Explore the best places outside Stockholm's city centre, such as Sodermalm for shopping, to hang out in a fashionable bar, or alternatively visit the royal summer palace, Drottningholm Castle, for the summer opera season and open-air plays in the surrounding park.

Drive out of Stockholm to Vaxholm or further to the old city of Sigtuna on the shores of Lake Malaren just 40 kilometres north of Stockholm, or the university city of Uppsala is just 63 kilometres away. Take care to avoid hitting a wandering moose.
