Los Angeles beach

Los Angeles Airport (LAX), just 15 miles south west of the city of Los Angeles, is California's largest and busiest airport, the second largest in the United States and the world's fifth-busiest passenger airport.

Its nine terminals serve flights throughout California, North America and worldwide. LAX is the largest cargo hub in California.

Arrange a pick-up for Los Angeles car hire on your arrival. If you would like to see the Pacific Ocean as soon as possible, take the Lincoln Highway and drive for about half an hour to Marina Del Rey, Venice Beach and Santa Monica. This is where you can get the connection to the Pacific Coast Highway. Turn left down the hill towards Malibu and enjoy the spectacular view.

After taking in the sight of the ocean to your left, look round to the right at Malibu and you'll see the Getty Villa. This has housed part of the Getty Museum collection since 2006. The main part of the Getty Museum is at the Getty Center itself in Bel Air, just west of Los Angeles and Beverley Hills.

LA signpost
To get to Beverly Hills from LAX take Century Boulevard to 405 Freeway North and Wilshire Boulevard, drive two blocks north to Brighton Way and turn left into Rodeo Drive for some star spotting and shopping. If you would like to take the famous Universal Studios tour just carry on north to Burbank, California's film and media city.

Los Angeles itself has lots of attractions for culture buffs, especially the LA Philharmonic and LA Opera. Both of these are based at the LA County Music Center in downtown LA just a drive down the Hollywood Freeway from West Hollywood.

Drive south of LAX to reach San Diego on the Mexican border and its famous Sea World. You will enjoy this city as it has one of the best climates in the world, at any time of year. Take the Santa Ana Freeway to San Diego via the Knotts Berry Farm amusement park just north of Anaheim and with LA Disney just to its south. These are places where you can relive your childhood.

Wine lovers will find few better destinations than California's wineries in the Central Valley. Carry on driving north of Burbank to Bakersfield and Fresno, two of the Central Valley's main cities. Then get out of the car and enjoy walking around the orchards, gardens and vineyards and tasting the produce.
