Why go?

This sunny British outpost is an intriguing place to visit. Find cheap flights to Gibraltar and enjoy a great-value break...

At a little over two square miles, this fascinating slice of little Britain dangles from the southern coast of Spain. If it wasn't for the huge slab of rock and the cheeky Barbary macaques that prowl its slopes in search of their next snack, you could almost be convinced that you were in Britain.

The cosy pubs, the red post boxes, the fish and chip shops ... but just take a look around the tree-dotted public squares and shady shopping streets - the best bits of the Mediterranean have soaked into the soul of Gibraltar and together this mesmerising mishmash of culture, architecture and people make for an unforgettable break.

Known as The Rock, or just Gib, Gibraltar welcomes passengers flying into Gibraltar International Airport (GIB). Flights from UK airports take around three hours.

Must-visit attractions include the Upper Rock, where those inquisitive apes can be seen, and the caves and tunnels that have been carved into this slab of limestone. The beaches of Gibraltar are as sun-drenched and beautiful as those across the border in Spain. Water sports and dolphin-spotting trips also help to pass the time on this enchanting patch of British soil.

How to get there?

Flying into Gibraltar is one of the most exciting landings you will make due to its unique location, and there is no shortage of direct flights from the UK...

British Airways has served Gibraltar for many years and its daily services from London Heathrow take around three hours to reach The Rock.

Monarch has regular flights from Luton, Manchester and Birmingham, and easyJet flies in daily from London Gatwick.

There are no connecting services to Gibraltar other than via London, Birmingham or Manchester

Getting to and from the airport

It's only a small outcrop of land, so getting to and from Gibraltar Airport is easy...

Take a taxi from the airport to your hotel in Gibraltar. A fleet of cabs can be found just outside the doors of the terminal building. There are a few other taxi ranks around Gibraltar to pick up a car for your return journey.

Public buses on Route 5 run every 10-15 minutes between the airport and the city centre from early until late, stopping at a few other destinations.

If you are planning on getting out and about a lot and driving into Spain, car hire in Gibraltar is a good investment. If you only want to see the sights of The Rock, then you will probably prefer to get around on foot and by using public transport.

Where to stay?

Once you've got your flight to Gibraltar booked, you'll need a place to stay...

The good news is that Gibraltar has a good range of hotels. There are a few head-turners, where modern luxury and elegant dining prevails, though many of the hotels in Gibraltar are quite old-fashioned, paying a little too much of a tribute to the area's proud naval heritage and British traditions. They are good value for money, however, and offer clean, comfortable stays at the heart of the action.

Just over the border are the white-washed resorts and cities of Spain's Costa del Sol. There's nothing to stop you booking Gibraltar flights and staying over the “Frontier” in Spain. In fact, hotels can be significantly cheaper in Spain, so it's worth comparing prices using TravelSupermarket to find the best deals on flights and hotels.
