Myrtos Beach, Kefalonia

It's not difficult to see why the Greek island of Kefalonia was chosen to be the setting for Captain Corelli's Mandalin. With its deserted beaches, clear sea, mountainous cliffs and pinewoods, Kefalonia is arguably one of the most beautiful Greek Islands.

There are flights to Kefalonia airport (EFL) from the UK. Otherwise, you can fly via Athens, as there are daily flights from the mainland the islands. Whichever airport you choose, you're sure to have a fantastic holiday. There are several resorts to stay in around Kefalonia and which one you stay in really depends on what sort of holiday you're looking for. Skala is perfect for couples and families looking for a quiet relaxing break. Its long beaches and hidden coves are its main quality, with a small high street around 100 yards away with shops and tavernas.

Sami, being the second largest port in Kefalonia, is a good resort to stay in for families and couples wanting to explore and take the ferry to Patra on the mainland. You can also catch the ferry here which takes you to the local island of Ithaki, boasting picturesque landscapes and stunning beaches.
For those who are looking for action and adventure, Kefalonia's Lassi resort is situated next to The Albatros water-sport centre. Here, you can ride jet-ski's, learn to water ski and take trips around the bay on 'doughnuts' and 'bananas'.

Couples or holidaymakers wanting a more active nightlife should try staying in Kefalonia's capital, Argostoli. With clubs such as Bass, Cinema and Kastro and bars including Captains and Stavento, you're sure not to be disappointed.

Assos is surrounded by the remains of a Venetian fortress and is a great part of Kefalonia to stay in for history lovers. This national heritage fortress contains beautiful examples of Venetian architecture. There are also a couple more resorts around Kefalonia such as Lourdas and Fiskardo for those wanting relaxing beaches.

Typical white and blue Greek building

One fantastic place to visit in Kefalonia is the Drogornati Caves. Found 5km south of Sami village, these caves were discovered 300 years ago and have been opened to the public since 1963. The cave is thought to be 150million years old.

If visiting the stunning Drogornati caves whet your appetite for adventure, then the Melissani underground lake is definitely worth a visit. The best time to go is around midday, which is when the sun lights the lake from the top of the caves and is truly stunning.

Kefalonia is full of activity around Easter time and makes it a great time to visit. The islands churches are covered with colourful flowers and there are street parties and large gatherings with food on offer, traditionally lamb and eggs to celebrate.

Around the same time, on 21st May there is a festival which takes place on the island every year to mark the union of the Ionian Islands. This takes place in Kefalonia's main town of Argostoli. Remember, if you wish to visit around these times, be sure to book your hotel in advance to avoid disappointment.
