Zante, otherwise known as Zakynthos, is a part of the Ionian Islands, just off the west coast of Greece. With its beautiful beaches, peaceful and charming villages like Alykanas and the thriving night life of Laganas, there is something here for everyone.

Why go?

Zante's stunning beaches and warm turquoise waters are a huge draw for tourists, but this Ionian jewel offers visitors so much more. Here's why you should go...

The beautiful golden sand beaches are one of the islands main attractions and with so many to choose from it is easy to find your own quiet space. Great resorts include Kalamaki, Tsilvi, Alykes and Agios Dimitrios, though there are many more.

Shipwreck bay or Navagio beach lies close to Anafotira village. This stunning beach is only accessible by boat due to the high cliffs and is famous for the shipwreck of a boat in the bay. Whilst the terrain to the north of the island is quite mountainous, the southern area gives way to many glorious sandy beaches.

The famous blue caves, or blue caves of Volimes lie on the west coast by the pretty village of Volimes. These rock formations reflect the light and colour of the water and are a popular tourist site. This is also where you can see some of the few Carella Turtles, who come to the beaches to lay their eggs in the sand.

Visit the salt pans and stunning lakes, or the fascinating St George Gremon monastery; for a great day trip away from the island you can cross the Ionian Sea to visit Olympia and the Temple of Zeus. This seasonal, summer-time island offers a great mixture of hotel based and self-catering holidays, with some resorts now offering all inclusive holidays.

There are a number of resorts on offer for your Greek getaway. If you're looking for a quiet destination with beautiful beaches and warm crystal waters then Kalamaki is a good option.

Here, you can enjoy day trips out on glass-bottomed boats and visit attractions such as the shipwreck on Navagio Beach, only reachable by sea. By night, there are a number of traditional tavernas where you'll be able to sample fresh Greek delicacies and maybe even enjoy some plate smashing!

Similarly, traditional Alykanas is a good option for those looking for a small resort and is popular with families. Active types will be kept entertained as there are plenty of watersports to try your hand at on the fantastic beach.

However, it's not all quiet resorts and quaint villages in Zante. Party animals seeking a buzzing nightlife will be in their element in Laganas. Wildlife lovers may also be drawn to Laganas as protected loggerhead turtles, or 'carettas', are also resident here and lay their eggs in the sand. Be aware that you may not be allowed on the beach in the evening to further protect the species and the baby turtles as they hatch and make their way to the water.

Beach lovers should also consider booking their holiday in Vassilikos on the south eastern part of the island. Beautiful and untouched, there are a number of fantastic sandy stretches in this area, including Banana Beach, St Nicholas Beach and Kaminia Beach.

The small fishing port of Argassi is another option for your stay. With its shallow waters, its small shingle beach is great for families with little ones and is close to Zante Town where culture vultures will get their fill and shopaholics can splash the cash.
