As flights to Carriacou approach the island, passengers get their first glimpse of white sandy beaches, turquoise water and lush tropical vegetation. Carriacou is reached by plane to Maurice Bishop International Airport, Grenada (GND), with an onward plane journey of twenty minutes to Lauriston Airport, Carricou (CDY).

Grenada is a very quiet island, only seven miles long and three miles wide. It is hilly, with most of the island being tropical woodland. It's a great place for a relaxing holiday. But if you want more activity in the form of waterspouts or hiking, then Carriacou is also a great place.

Carriacou means 'Land of Reefs' and there are many coral reefs around the coast. They are unspoiled and some of them very accessible, making the island very popular with divers and snorkelers, both beginners and those with more experience. Apart from the reefs, coral is beginning to grow on some of the shipwrecks that lie beneath the water. There is an active underwater volcano, Kick 'Em Jenny, with reports of infrequent activity. Tropical fish and turtles may also be seen in the blue waters. Besides swimmers and divers, the island is popular with sailors.

Hillsborough is the largest town and also the main port. It has long stretches of white beaches, some small shops and restaurants, a fish market, a museum and botanical gardens.

Some very special beaches include Anse la Roche, which you may find you have to yourself. Or you may see pelicans gathered on the rock which gives the beach its name. It is about half an hour's walk from the road. Another beautiful beach is Paradise Beach, where locals go swimming and another place good for swimming is Tom's Bay.

If walking is your thing, there are tracks around the island and some great walks up to the highest peaks which give brilliant view across to Grenada.

For a fantastic day out, hire a car and take a trip to Sandy Island. This uninhabited island is a typical tropical paradise, with white beaches fringed with coconut palms. You should hear hummingbirds and herons. Just off the island is a coral reef and also lots of colourful fish so of you like snorkelling you will have a fantastic time. Another great island for a day trip is Petite Martinique. This is the only island off Carriacou which is inhabited.
