Compare the best Tahiti flights

The volcanic island of Tahiti is the largest of the Windward Isles in French Polynesia and lies in the South Pacific Ocean. Flights to Tahiti end with a broad smile when you step off the plane and see what's waiting for you.

Why go?

Stunning beaches, crystal clear waters and one of the friendliest welcomes in the Pacific. What's not to like?

The island is home to the town of Papeete - the capital of French Polynesia. The stunning island is lush with tropical vegetation and surrounded by coral reefs, making it a top spot for nature lovers and divers.

The towering forms of Mount Orohena and other looming volcanoes make for a dramatically beautiful natural landscape. The deep green valleys, rushing rivers, exotic flowers, fruit and vegetable plantations and cascading waterfalls add to the long list of attractions for outdoor types. Tahiti Museum is a good bet for rainy days, with its interesting displays of historic island artefacts, while nearby attractions such as the beautiful island of Bora Bora can be reached by boat.

The island's undulating valleys are perfect for nature walks and rambles, while the many white sandy beaches are great for relaxing and enjoying a cooling coconut water or a cocktail. Scuba diving and snorkelling among the coral reefs are popular activities in Tahiti, while the Lagoonarium is an impressive aquarium attraction that allows visitors to step into an underground world where they can appreciate magnificent marine life up close.

How to get there

Flying to this Pacific beauty requires a long journey of around 24 hours and up...

Air New Zealand has one-stop flights from London's Heathrow via Los Angeles. Air France flies via Paris and LA with departures from around the UK including London, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester. These flights take a little longer than the Air New Zealand alternative.

Getting to and from the airport

The capital of Papeete is only a 10-minute drive along the coast from the well-connected Faa'a International Airport...

Faa'a International Airport (PPT) lies just a short distance from the town centre of Papeete and has only one runway. Although small in size, the airport serves as the hub for air transport to the island and sees international travellers from across the globe land here to enjoy holidays in tropical Tahiti.

Most resorts and large hotels lay on coach transfers for guests, while taxis are easily available to transport travellers to most points on the island. There are two terminals at the airport and it has ample car parking as well as several cafes and coffee shops.

After a flight to Tahiti, a taxi from the airport to Papeete will cost little more than £5-£6 (300 French Pacific francs). There's a small bus terminal close to the parking lot of Faa'a Airport, with journeys into Papeete costing about £1.

Where to stay

Opulence is almost a way of life for visitors to Tahiti, and this is reflected in the standard of many of its hotels...

Most hotels in Tahiti are located in and around the resorts of the island's north-west. Here you'll find a range of well-known hotel names and some truly astonishing private mansions that have been turned into fabulous places to stay.

The resorts often offer the most romantic accommodation with over-the-water bungalows benefitting from all the trappings that these luxurious complexes offer.

However, the many lavish hotels that populate Tahiti and neighbouring Bora Bora don't mean this Pacific gem is out of everyone's reach. Terrific little private and family-run guesthouses suiting more modest budgets punctuate the big hotels stamped along the coastline.
