Koh Samui is a picturesque island located off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, in Thailand. It is the second largest island in Thailand, with the biggest island being Phuket.
The island is part of the Ang Thong archipelago which features several resort islands, as well as unspoiled fishing villages. Visitors to Koh Samui can enjoy Koh Pha Ngan's full moon parties, spend the day relaxing on Lamia Beach, or go exploring Chaweng Lake.
Other popular attractions in the area include Chaweng Beach, the island of Koh Toa, which offers some wonderful diving and snorkelling opportunities, the spectacular Hin Lat Falls and the Wat Phra Yai Buddhist temples. The fisherman's village of Bophut is a good place to visit to see what life is like for locals on the island. Popular local foods include salted eggs and a tropical fruit known as rambutan.
There are several interesting events held in Koh Samui each year. The Samui Regatta is an annual sailing festival which attracts competitors from all over the world. The Koh Samui Triathlon, organized by the International Triathlon Union, attracts hundreds of competitors each year. The island's Buffalo Fighting Festival, which takes place a few times a year on special public holidays, is an interesting event involving a lot of ceremony and celebration.
Flights to Koh Samui tend to go via Bangkok, although some flights are available via Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Koh Samui's main airport is Samui International Airport (USM), which stands just 2KM north of the island's main village, Chaweng. Getting to the airport is easy. There are minibuses and private car services running to the airport from all of the main villages on the island and tickets can be purchased in advance from the Arrivals area. Hertz, Sixt, Budget and Avis car rental services are also available.
