The 'Sunshine State' of Florida has long been a popular destination for holidaymakers. Walt Disney World in Orlando or the exciting rides at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay are just some of the world-class attractions which make Florida the destination for a great family holiday.

Why go?

Whatever your age, there's so much to see and do in sun and fun-filled Florida...

Famous for its great weather, relaxed lifestyle and, of course, Disney World, Florida is a consistent favourite with British holidaymakers.

There are many more attractions and theme parks close to Orlando too, such as Universal, making this a great place for family entertainment.

There are also many other great places to visit in Florida. The Florida Keys offers great scuba diving opportunities where you can swim among the stunning mangroves and marine life. You can also visit the Everglades with its fascinating flora and fauna.

The exciting and glamorous city of Miami has great restaurants and nightlife, as well as excellent shopping venues and world famous golden beaches.

During the spring and autumn months the temperature in Florida is around 30 degrees Celsius and this is a popular time to visit. During the summer it gets even warmer with high humidity.

There is so much to see and do in Florida that hiring a car is an ideal option, particularly if you want to explore more than one area.

How to get there?

Getting to and from the airport

Flights to Florida take around nine hours from the UK. There are five airports in the state so the area is easily accessible for Florida flights from all international locations.

The nearest airports to Walt Disney world and many other theme parks are Orlando International Airport MCO, or Sanford International SFB. Tampa Bay airport TBA is on the west coast, close to the resorts of St Petersburg and Clearwater. Fort Lauderdale Airport FLL is ideally located for visiting the Florida Keys and Miami International MIA, for Miami. Both are located on the Atlantic coast

As you would expect from such a service-orientated country, each of Florida's five major airports (Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, and Orlando Sanford) has excellent bus services into their respective cities.

Orlando offers good express services into the centre, with regular connections for Disney World. Those heading down to Key West will find excellent shuttle bus services from Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports, and at Tampa airport, as with all five airports, a round-the-clock taxi service is available.

Where to stay?

Florida is a vast American state with thousands of hotels, motels, resorts and spas, as well as cosy bed & breakfasts.

It's often cheaper to book your hotel and flight as a package. Hotel accommodation remains the most popular option but remember, in the USA, self-catering apart-hotels are very common. This can be a great choice for families who want flexibility and to organise their own meals.

If you do opt for a hotel, expect excellent service and large portions in the restaurants. Florida is a very modern state but still has some old fashioned charm and some Latin American influences too. The luxury five-star hotels take some beating and the rooms are often mini-suites - huge and with a lounge area and even a kitchen.

If you appreciate art deco style, great nightlife and beach fun, Miami's South Beach is a great choice. For families, Orlando remains a top favourite, and those who enjoy a fly-drive will find most hotels have excellent parking facilities.

Alternately, for the more adventurous, do as many Americans do and hire a holiday motorhome to get to even more far flung locations. Winnebago hire is an increasingly popular option for foreign holidaymakers and great fun.
