Miami is a city on the Atlantic coast, on the south-eastern side of Florida. As the largest city in the state, this busy metropolitan area is a place to see and be seen in, especially with the restaurants, bars and clubs of South Beach popular with celebrities.

Why go?

Take a flight to Miami to enjoy the glitz and glamour overflowing in the main tourist and entertainment areas. But there is more to the city.

The range of cultural experiences includes local entertainment, theatres and performing arts centres. These include the Adrienne Arsht Centre for the Performing Arts, Ziff Ballet Opera House, Knight Concert Hall and Bayfront Park Amphitheatre. Not to mention the wide variety of museums and parks that make for a great family day out.

Local museums display both art and science exhibitions and include the Miami Art Museum, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens and the Miami-Dade Cultural Centre. However, for a real taste of Miami's colourful cultural scene why not take a trip to the Capital of Little Havana.

Here you can enjoy good music, food and if you get your timing right some excellent carnival fun with the annual Calle Ocho street festival. Or for something a little more relaxing take a trip to the historic Port of Miami, Fisher Island, or the local marine life at the Seaquarium.

Additional sites of interest include the Botanicas, Jimbo's, Wolfsonian and Lincoln Road Mall for shopping. Or why not head out to the Everglades for nature, Kennedy Space centre, the Florida Keys, Key West and Key Biscayne, Coconut grove and Miami Zoo. Whatever you choose to do, there's enough to keep all ages happy and entertained and all without the hassle and stress of travelling too far away from the city.

Travelling in and around the city is simple using the local rail and road systems, with the Metrorail providing an efficient connection between the suburbs, central business districts and the airport.

Where to stay?

Miami has a huge range of accommodation, from boutique art deco hotels to reliable chains.

Around the airport, hotels range from basic motels through to five-star luxury.

However, most people visiting the city will want to be downtown, near the ocean. The most popular area is South Beach, famed for its entertainment and often individually owned and operated art deco hotels. Look out for the characterful properties on Ocean Drive with
beach-facing restaurants and bars.

The Collins Avenue area is good if you plan to do a lot of shopping in the malls around Bal Harbour. If you need to be near the business district downtown, then opt for Biscayne Boulevard or Brickell Avenue.

All the major hotel chains are represented in the city, and it should be easy to find something within your budget. You are advised to book in the business or tourist areas for safety.
