Stay safe and secure on holiday

When staying at a cottage, gîte or holiday home, the owners of the property will do their best to ensure you are safe, however please remember that when you're staying in unfamiliar surroundings, it's up to you to take care of yourself and your family.

This may sound simple, but it's easy to forget when you're relaxing on holiday.

In particular...

  • Check the layout of your accommodation so you can escape easily in an emergency.
  • Check for a fire extinguisher/fire blanket and that they're in working order.
  • Ensure you use the fireguard if your property has an open fire.
  • Keep young children off balconies.
  • Check for any dangers in the garden e.g. pond, steps, boundary fencing etc. that could put children or anyone else at risk.
  • If you are unsure how to use any electrical appliances or think they are broken, contact the owner/caretaker.
  • Check all appliances are switched off when you go out or go to bed.

Also, if there's a swimming pool at your property:

  • Check which end is shallow/deep - don't go diving straight in.
  • Check for lifejackets or other buoyancy aids.
  • Always supervise children or anyone else who may be at risk.

Do as you would do in your own home.

  • Ensure the property is properly locked up when you go out or go to bed.
  • Don't leave any valuables on show.
  • Keep your car keys away from open windows, doors and letterboxes.
  • Take out travel insurance.
