Ski holidays in Serbia and Slovenia

Now that the Balkans are beginning to shake off the after-effects of their long and bitter civil conflict, opportunities for adventurous ski and snowboarding travellers are increasing. Both Serbia and Slovenia have many excellent ski centres with lifts.

Skiing in Serbia was popular during the 1970s and 80s, and has been enjoying a comeback since the ending of the regional wars and turmoil. Slovenia's resorts also offer excellent value for money, especially for family-centred snow holidays.

Kopaonik

The purpose-built resort of Kopaonik is located in the south-eastern part of Serbia. The area gets plenty of snow and also enjoys a high percentage of sunny days. The resort has been gradually expanding and offers 21 lifts, giving access to a good spread of easy runs as well as longer intermediate pistes. Bi-lingual instructors are available and very cheap.

Kranjska Gora

Kranjska Gora is Slovenia's premier ski resort, located in the Julian Alps not far from the Austrian and Italian boarders. Skiing has taken place here for more than 60 years. Ski holidays in Kranjska Gora offer a great number of varied runs, with 30km of mainly intermediate slopes, plus some more challenging runs.

Maribor Pohorje

Mariborsko Pohorje is Slovenia's second largest city, set on a low mountain range, but its highest peak, at 1347 meters offers good downhill skiing. Snow cannon and careful grooming guarantee 100 days of skiing, and when temperatures remain low enough, the trails are snow-covered all the way to the valley. The area is lit for night skiing, and its illuminated 5km ski run is the longest in Europe.
