Egypt, situated on the north eastern coast of Africa, has long stretches of coastline on both the Mediterranean and Red Seas. As one of the hottest and sunniest countries in the world, it has a desert climate that rarely sees rain and at just a seven hour flight time from the UK, it is easily accessible and increasingly popular with tourists seeking winter sun. This is a country of true diversity - from the flora and fauna of the Nile valley and the barren sands of Sinai Desert to the golden beaches and exotic marine life of the Red Sea Peninsula. Visit Cairo, the capital city, for the Pyramids, Sphinxes and a wealth of museums or head further south to Luxor for ancient temples and tombs, including the Valley of the Kings.

The Red Sea Peninsula, best known for its clear waters, exotic fish, coral reefs, thriving beach resorts and year-round sunshine, has developed into a popular holiday destination not only for divers but also for families, couples and honeymooners. Sharm el Sheikh, perhaps the best known of the Red Sea resorts was once just a small fishing village but the massive growth in tourism over the last 15 years has seen it transform into a lively, bustling beach-side resort packed with a variety of hotels that are stretched along a palm-fringed promenade.

Similarly, El Gouna, spread across a network of islands and turquoise lagoons has a wide variety of activities to keep holidaymakers of all ages amused. Aside from the huge selection of water sports and recreation facilities there's an 18 hole golf course, a karting circuit and a museum, which focuses on ancient Egyptian culture and art. For a quieter break visit Hurghada, which has more than 20km of beach-side hotels, a small town centre, a wealth of ship wrecks and a number of offshore islands that are home to both acclaimed dive sites and exotic marine life.
