Holidays in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico

Described as having the finest white sand beaches on the River Maya, Puerto Aventuras is a community resort with a blend of tropical beauty and an easy going, gentile atmosphere. Most of the resort was built around 10 years ago, and its popularity has grown ever since with massive tourism potential. There are many historic sites within close reach that echo the Mexican Mayan culture, and yet Puerto Aventuras is overwhelmingly modern with shopping, watersports and nightlife. The weather is good all year-round, particularly during the summer when temperatures can peak close to 40°C, while winters remain mild to warm. Puerto Aventuras can be reached after a short car journey from Cancun Airport, which takes approximately ten and a half hours to fly to from UK airports.

Best for...

Puerto Aventuras has something for all tastes and budgets, is overwhelmingly modern and yet surrounded by history…

With its boutique spas, all-inclusive hotels and beachfront residences, there is a range of affordable accommodation to satisfy all tastes and budgets. Puerto Aventuras is also home to a number of cultural sites and with numerous watersports options and child-friendly beaches this is a great spot for family holidays. Those in search of a romantic break will probably prefer the neighbouring Punta Brava and its adult-only resort, but there are many secluded areas within Puerto Aventuras with visitors almost guaranteed some privacy, even in the high season of hotel occupancy.

What to do...

The main beach area in Puerto Aventuras is to be found in the central part of the resort at Fatima Bay. There are more than 1.5miles of white sand to be enjoyed in this private resort that ends at the Grand Peninsula. As with all of the beaches at Puerto Aventuras, Fatima Bay is child friendly and with shallow waters, it is one of the safest beaches on the Caribbean coast.

Chan Yu Yum is a smaller bay at the north of the resort. This serves the Oasis Hotel and there are a number of small bed and breakfast options along the coastline. Chac Hal Al, on the south side of the resort, is privately owned and just a few private owners enjoy this nature reserve. There's plenty to do within the water of all of Puerto Aventuras' beaches including jet skiing, water skiing and windsurfing. Scuba diving is the most popular activity in the area, with the reef comparable to those off the coast of Australia and many dive centres offering experienced staff to help you get started. You can even swim with dolphins at Dolphin Discovery Puerto Aventuras.

The Puerto Aventuras Marina is a full service dockside area if you want to experience life on a yacht, while Puerto Aventuras is also a popular golf holiday destination with a beautiful tropical jungle course full of wildlife, palm trees and lush foliage.

The nightlife scene is comparatively quiet in the Puerto Aventuras area with most of the live music available at the larger hotels. For a livelier scene, head to neighbouring Cancun and Playa del Carmen. There is a much wider range of restaurants in Puerto Aventuras however, with international and local dining options.

Puerto Aventuras is in the centre of Mexico's Mayan culture and is just minutes away from the area's ancient ruins. There are plenty of shops to visit including Arte Maye, a Mexican designer shop with clothing, jewellery, accessories and hats available, while Mataham sells local crafts and paintings. If you're looking to keep the children busy head to Xcaret park which has horse shows, a butterfly pavilion, sea turtles and a coral reef aquarium.
