Beach in Alvor

At the mouth of the Alvor estuary, flanked by a lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean, nestles one of the most charming resorts on the western Algarve. In the delightful village of Alvor, you can unwind on the golden beaches, explore the secluded coves or conquer some of the best Atlantic waves on your surfboard.

Relaxation is a way of life in this quiet part of Portugal, and with a vast beach sporting plenty of sunbeds and a couple of laidback restaurants just a short stroll from the village, it's easy to see why.

There are several other beaches nearby that are well worth a visit though - either by shuttle bus, taxi or hire car. Praia dos Tres Irmaos, for example, is a dramatic sight with imposing rock formations (the “Three Brothers”) overlooking the golden sand.

Exquisite beaches are not the only attraction of Alvor holidays, however.  Kayaking and golf are two of the main leisure activities for visitors and locals alike, while the joy of simply taking a romantic stroll through the meandering streets and discovering its many enchanting restaurants is a must.

Traditional and modern European dishes can be tasted at eateries hidden among the cute fishermen's cottages, interesting shops and beautiful churches.

And once the sun has set, take your pick between the quiet, intimate bars and the livelier nightspots where you can end the day with a dance.

Alvor holidays can also be made that little bit more memorable by exploring the surrounding area. Car hire is inexpensive, as are taxis. A taxi from Faro Airport (FAO) will cost about 60 euros.
