Overview

Overview

Stately, elegant, gracious? Yes, but don't be fooled by Adelaide's ‘City of Churches' tag. It's also progressive, proud and idiosyncratic – as obsessed by art as it is by Aussie rules football – and as eager to have fun as any other city in the country.

See

Bunched conveniently together are the South Australian Museum, the Botanic Gardens and the Art Gallery of South Australia – with its impressive collection of indigenous South Australian art. Open your mind even more at Port Adelaide's fascinating Maritime Museum and Migration Museum, or come into contact with indigenous culture at the Tandanya Cultural Centre.

New

Explore the leafiness of the newly landscaped Adelaide Parklands. This green belt area, stretching north of the city along the River Torrens, includes the cultural precinct of museums and art galleries.

Spend

Sample the best local produce such as cheeses, breads and especially wines, made in regions such as the Barossa and Coonawarra, just hours away from Adelaide. Wander through the department stores of the Rundle Street Mall and the charming, surprising boutiques of the Adelaide Arcade for clothes and chocolates.

Get Out

Famous for its greenery, Adelaide's great outdoors begin in the heart of town at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and Elder Park to the north of main street North Terrace. Within 12km of the city centre, the Belair National Park provides a rural escape in the midst of suburbia, while you can get a view over Adelaide from Beacon Hill. Favourite Adelaide beaches include Glenelg and Henley Beach. Further out of town are the Adelaide Hills, the highest of which is 727m Mount Lofty.

Culture

The Adelaide Festival Centre is the performing arts hub of the city, and the heart and soul at the biennial Adelaide Festival of the Arts. As well as a sculpture garden, it contains several theatres that hold up to 6,000 theatregoers. Other Adelaide cultural spaces include the Adelaide Repertory Theatre, Australia's oldest continuing amateur theatre company, and Her Majesty's Theatre, a grand 1913 home to plays, live concerts and some opera.

Eat & Drink

Hutt Street in the city centre is home to some of the city's best restaurants. At nearby Rundle Mall, alfresco café dining makes the most of the fine climate. Gouger Street is the hub of multicultural cuisine, and also the site of Adelaide's Chinatown.

New Perspective

Pop open the cork of a Barossa cabernet on a picnic blanket at the top of Beacon Hill. Take in the 360° vista of the city, hills and sea.

Prepare

Prepare

What's the luggage limit on your ticket? How much does a bottle of wine weigh? Better double-check. This may be your best chance to stock your cellar with Australia's finest drops.

Adelaide Year

Lose yourself in culture in even years, as the Adelaide Festival of the Arts performers take centre stage in March. Handily, you can head here at this time every year, for the renowned Fringe Festival and Womadelaide, a world music festival. Rev up for the Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar road race also in March, and have a flutter on the Adelaide Cup horse race in March again. Find your pulse racing in time with the city's in September, which is Aussie rules football finals month, then regain your composure for the Royal Adelaide Show (also in September), a combination of amusement park and agricultural exhibition. The Adelaide Oval hosts its annual international test cricket match in December.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day (1 Jan), Australia Day (26 Jan), Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), Anzac Day (25 Apr), Adelaide Cup Day (May), Queen's Birthday (Jun), Labour Day (early Oct), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Proclamation Day (26 Dec).

Weather

Adelaide's winters are mild but changeable (8-16°C). Spring is notoriously fickle – pack for each eventuality. Summer heat can be intense but is usually relieved by intermittent cool changes: when it's hot, it's usually never hot for long. Summer minimum and maximum temperatures range from 17°C to 28°C. Autumn's the most pleasant time of year here.

Electricity

240V AC, 50 Hz, three-pin plugs are standard, but not the same three-pin plugs as Britain's. Adaptors are readily available in electrical goods stores, pharmacies and some travel agencies.

Dialling Code

+61 (national), (8) regional from overseas and (08) regional from within Australia + eight-figure number usually beginning with 8.

Money

Australian dollar ($ or AUD) is the currency.

GMT

GMT +9.5 (+10.5 in summertime).

Fit In

The City of Churches' teetotaller reputation has long been laid to rest. In liberal, progressive Adelaide, there are no rules on how to dress. Whether you're a wallflower or you like to express yourself, just go for comfort.

Highlights

Highlights

A graceful Australian city, the best of Adelaide is right in the centre of town. Enjoy the greenery and architecture, and the food and wine, with a satisfied sigh.

Concentrate your visit at the North Terrace, the main street at the northern end of the central business district. It's home to many of South Australia's prime political institutions, such as Parliament House, Old Parliament House and Government House. Get cultural here too, with the South Australian Museum and the South Australian Art Gallery. Amuse yourself at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens and Elder Park, and – on the Torrens River – at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

There are even rewards that aren't by North Terrace, believe it or not. These include the Maritime Museum, the Migration Museum and indigenous Tandanya Cultural Centre.

Sightseeing Tips

Opening hours for the major museums and galleries are 10am to 5pm daily. There are no entry fees, which is always a bonus.
