Overview                    Prepare                    Get Around                    Highlights

Hotels in Niagara Falls tend to be themed upon the assertion that Niagara Falls is the 'Honeymoon Capital of the World', and a hotel room overlooking the Falls must surely rank amongst the most romantic of all views.  Niagara Falls hotels can also be on the expensive side, though prices may drop a little in the cold winter, when parts of the waterfall can be seen to have frozen.

a hotel room overlooking the Falls must surely rank amongst the most romantic of all views....

Hotel rooms that actually have a view of the falls will be the most expensive option, with prices lessening the further you get from the attraction itself.  Some hotels offer spa facilities, and most will have some form of shuttle to the main tourist areas.  If you are hiring a car, then location is one way to save money.

Luxury hotels are, therefore, often the order of the day here, although cheap hotels in Niagara Falls are available if you shop around using a price comparison tool.  There are some very family friendly hotel options and, with a little effort, you can find a hotel to suit your needs and your pocket.

Overview

Overview

Experience the majestic might of one of the world's greatest wonders from below, behind and above, then soak up adrenalin-pumping adventure thrills, enjoy family fun days out, tour vineyards and go clubbing or tempt Lady Luck at night.

Seeing Niagara Falls

Watch torrents cascading over Horseshoe Falls from the adjacent Table Rock and at its base from White Water Walk. Get wet aboard the Maid of the Mist boat. Descend into tunnels behind the thundering curtain for a Journey Behind the Falls, or soar above the falls and see mist-induced rainbows on a flight with Niagara Helicopters. Don't miss the nightly Falls Illumination spectacle.

Around Niagara

Tour the Wine Route to sample the produce of the Niagara Peninsula's 50 wineries. Imagine life at the time of the landmark War of 1812 at former British garrison Fort Erie, south of Niagara Falls, and one-time British HQ Fort George, at Niagara-on-the-Lake. For a slice of American pie, cross the border to Niagara Falls, New York, and see the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

Escape

Stroll the tree-lined streets of the original capital of Upper Canada, Niagara-on-the-Lake, stopping along the Niagara Parkway to take in the Niagara Escarpment, a World Biosphere Reserve. Head on to the tranquil shores of Lake Ontario. In Niagara Falls, relax in flower-filled parks including Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, or secluded Dufferin Islands Park, just above the falls.

Adventure

Get soaked on Whirlpool Jet's exhilarating Wet Jet river trip on a jet boat from Niagara-on-the-Lake from May to October, or keep dry in the enclosed Jet Dome craft. Float over the Whirlpool Rapids below the falls, in the Whirlpool Aero Car suspended across the Niagara River. Cycle the 53km Niagara River Recreation Trail between Fort Erie and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Eat & Drink

Niagara is Canada's largest-producing region for soft fruits and they feature strongly on dessert menus. Winery restaurants make great places to pair home-cooked favourites such as rack of lamb with local wines, including icewine, made from frozen grapes picked at night.

Nightlife

The nightlife hotspot area is Clifton Hill where you'll find glitzy bars and clubs. If you don't want to dance, try your luck in Niagara Falls' two casinos. Casino Niagara has daily learn-to-play sessions for virgin gamblers, while the new Niagara Fallsview Casino has a wedding chapel if you're feeling lucky in love.

Take home

Wine lovers can grab bottles of local corkers such as Cabernet Franc or Meritage from Jackson-Triggs Winery, or a unique Niagara icewine. Stop off at the Canada One outlet mall and stock up on good-value Roots, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger clothes. If you really must go back with tacky gifts, head for Souvenir City, on River Road.

Prepare

Prepare

Pack summer clothes and shades plus woollies for nippy spring or autumn nights, and waterproofs or quick-dry tops for those close encounters with the falls.

Niagara Falls Year

Sample icewine in ice bars at the Niagara Icewine Festival (Jan) ), taste the latest harvest at the Niagara New Vintage Festival (Jun) and explore the region's other tipples at the Niagara Wine Festival (Sep). Go highbrow and enjoy works by celebrated authors at Niagara-on-the-Lake's Shaw Festival (end Mar-Nov), or be a big kid and marvel at the dazzling lights and firework displays of Niagara Falls' Winter Festival of Lights (Nov-early Jan).

Public Holidays

New Year's Day (1 Jan), Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), Victoria Day (May), Canada Day (1 Jul), Labour Day (Sep), Thanksgiving Day (Oct), Remembrance Day (11 Nov), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Boxing Day (26 Dec).

Weather

Summers are warm and generally settled with temperatures often reaching 30ºC or above in July. Autumns are pleasant and surprisingly long, the October high averaging over 15ºC. The Great Lakes effect makes winters milder than other parts of Canada. Daytime temperatures average a not-uncomfortable -1ºC in January, although heavy frosts lead to the falls and Niagara River partially freezing and prevent boat tours in winter. By March the days begin to warm up and from April and May the region is a profusion of colour.

Electricity

120V AC, 60 Hz, two-pin plugs are standard, sometimes with an earthed third pin.

Dialling Code

+1 (national), 905 + seven-figure number (Greater Toronto Area).

Money

Canadian dollar (C$) is the currency.
