Hotels in England are often defined by their location. This generally means that you will find a huge contrast in style depending on where you are staying. For example, the vast majority of Brighton hotels tend to be quite bohemian and funky whilst still stylish at the same time. This keeps in line with the general feel of the city itself, which has a delightfully laid back and 'laissez faire' attitude, combined with a rich heritage of classical and Georgian architecture.

A major city such as Birmingham, for example, will tend to have hotels that are designed more as a functional resting place that simply offers you a base from which you can explore this remarkably multicultural city. Indeed, many insist that Birmingham has more to offer in the way of culture and entertainment, not to mention shopping opportunities, than any other location in the United Kingdom.

The inhabitants of the country's capital city, London, will no doubt disagree. For certain, it would be hard to argue the case against the fact that London has an atmosphere that is both unique and fascinating. Its attractions are easily explored due to an efficient public transport system.

The number of hotels in London, of course, is huge and perhaps more so than any other location. Here you will find an extraordinary range of venues. Indeed, whichever style of hotel you are looking for, from classical and elegant to modern and trendy and from luxuriously executive to down to earth budget, in London you will find them all. Naturally, hotels in the city centre will tend to be more expensive and staying in the more peripheral areas, such as North London's Highgate area, is a wise choice.

The areas of Bath and Bristol, on the other hand, offer an entirely different experience. Regarded by many as among the most beautiful cities in the country, both Bath and Bristol are steeped in an extraordinarily rich cultural heritage that stretches back to the Roman Empire. Bristol is an extremely diverse area. For historical interest, try the Old City, whilst the Harbourside remains the city's jewel in the crown for many visitors. For arts and entertainment, the best area to stay in is the West End.

Whilst there are plenty of attractions in the city of Bath, perhaps the main reason to go is to experience the famous Roman Baths. These are located in the city centre in Abbey Church Yard and with Bath Abbey very close by, this may be the area where you should be booking your hotel.

Finally, many of the finest England hotels are found in the city of Manchester. A sports-themed trip to Manchester is always a favourite and the Trafford area is best for this. For those looking for great nightlife, try Canal Street, whilst Didsbury is better for those looking for a more relaxed, quieter atmosphere.

Buckingham Palace

One of many attractions in the capital, the London residence of the Queen is an iconic landmark. Visitors can see parts of the interior on selected dates in summer.

Lake District National Park

Some would say that this is England at its most naturally beautiful. The hills, lakes, villages and mountains of this region, in the north east of the country, encourage visitors to walk, climb, bike and row, or to simply sit and gaze throughout the year.

The Cotswolds

This is the very image of rural England at its stereotyped best: quiet lanes criss-cross pastures that rise and fall to reveal sheep munching on grass, babbling brooks, honey-coloured cottages and cosy country pubs.

Warwick Castle

One of the most visited attractions in England, the striking shape of Warwick Castle dominates the skyline in this part of the Midlands and really brings horrible histories to life. Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, is a 20-minute drive from Warwick.

Alton Towers

This is England's most visited theme park and there are plenty of ways to be thrilled at this Staffordshire resort, which also features two hotels, a waterpark and a spa.

A huge number of annual events celebrate England's history, sporting past and cultural diversity, such as the Grand National and the Notting Hill Carnival. The three mentioned below are some of the highlights of a packed yearly round-up of events.

Trooping the Colour; June: Head to London in June to see this ceremonial event, which is held in The Mall to celebrate the Queen's official birthday.

Wimbledon; June-July: The only Grand Slam event of tennis still played on grass, the Wimbledon Championships serve up top sporting action alongside the obligatory strawberries and cream. Hotels in the area will be extremely busy during the tournament.

Great Yorkshire Show; July: Journey to the Great Yorkshire Showground in England's biggest county for a taste of rural life. It's the biggest agricultural show in Britain and everyone will find something interesting to see and do.
