Overview

Overview

Impossibly pretty, energetic and proud, one of Europe's smallest capital cities is an engaging mixture of old red rooftops and new designer malls. Here gothic architecture and traditional customs mingle with pop culture, sleek skyscrapers and e-commerce.

See

Amble through Tallinn's Old Town where monasteries, churches, merchant houses and the landmark Town Hall vie for attention. Look down on the lower town from Toompea, the hill dominated by the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and travel back to the days of Soviet rule at the Occupation Museum. Travel east to the regal Kadriorg Palace, or snap great photographs from the TV Tower.

Spend

Find traditional handicrafts, the alcoholic brew Vana Tallinn, delicate ceramics and amber imported from Lithuania in the Old Town boutiques and markets. Splurge on the latest fashions at the Old and New Town shopping centres and designer outlets, including Hugo Boss on Parnu and Maxmara on Harju.

Get Out

When the sun shines, unwind with a drink in the Old Town Square cafés, catch a breeze on Toompea Hill, or relax in the city's parks. The biggest and best is Kadriorg Park, with its opulent palace, sculptures, museums and lake.

Culture

Throughout the year venues around Tallinn come alive with everything from intimate classical concerts to grand opera performances. Listen to the soaring voices of the sopranos at the Estonian National Opera, or attend a recital in the atmospheric Old Town Hall or at the Linnahall near the harbour.

Eat & Drink

For such a small city, Tallinn harbours a huge range of dining options, offering everything from Hawaiian to Thai cuisine. You can reserve a coveted outdoor table on Town Hall Square, or receive the royal treatment at the city's best restaurant, Stenhus, at the Schlossle Hotel on Puhavaimu. Wolf down enormous portions of traditional Estonian game at Old Hansa on Vana turg.

New Perspective

Visit the Museum of Estonian Architecture, where the striking museum building – a former salt warehouse – is an attraction in its own right.

Prepare

Prepare

Arm yourself with a travel iron and don't forget your personal grooming kit. Bring a comfortable pair of shoes – it gets hilly in places.

Tallinn Year

Put winter behind you at the Tallinn Jazz Festival in April, travel back to medieval Tallinn at the Old Town Days festival in June, or party all night long during Midsummer's Night also in June. Join in with the revelry and drinking at the Beer Festival in July, and welcome in the New Year with your Estonian friends.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day (1 Jan), Independence Day (24 Feb), Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), Spring Day (1 May), Victory Day (23 Jun), St John's Day (24 Jun), Restoration of Independence (20 Aug), Christmas Day (25 Dec), St Stephen's Day (26 Dec).

Weather

Drink coffee or dine al-fresco at the Old Town's pavement cafés between June and September, when daytime temperatures rarely slip below 15°C. Wrap up warm and enjoy clear and crisp days – perfect for taking photographs – in the colder but drier months of December to March, when it's mostly freezing outside.

220V AC, 50 Hz, two-pin plugs are standard.

Highlights

Highlights

Tallinn is a compact city – the key sights conveniently cluster in the Old Town and Toompea.

Head for Toompea, home to the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Relive memories of Tallinn's Soviet past at the Museum of Occupation, discover centuries of local art at the Estonian Art Museum and the take in the country's political heart, the Parliament building.

In the medieval Old Town, find the Renaissance-era House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, and the vaulting spire of the Old Town Hall. Spend a whole day exploring the city's churches and monasteries, and get under the skin of the city at the Tallinn City Museum, with its collection of ceramics, weapons and old photographs. Learn about Estonian geology at the Natural History Museum, and discover some slightly more recent history with images from between 1840 and 1940 at the Photographic Museum.

Sightseeing Tips

If you want to delve into Tallinn's museums, don't visit on a Monday when most are closed. Many also close on Tuesdays, with opening hours generally Wednesday to Sunday 11am-6pm. Visit more than 40 museums free of charge with the Tallinn Card – though you may be hard-pressed to fit them all into the 48 hours its valid for…
