What's On?                     Overview                     Prepare                     Highlights

Whilst there are plentiful hotels in Cannes, these can prove insufficient when a major event, such as the International Film Festival, is ongoing.  Ensure that you book early to avoid disappointment, and compare prices online to get the best deal on your Cannes hotel.  Cannes hotels always raise their room rates at peak times, so avoiding such occasions when booking your hotel stay is advised.

Cannes offers a wide variety of accommodation, with opulent rooms in belle époque luxury hotels, as well as hotels of more modern design (one with a rooftop swimming pool).  There are a number of cheap hotels in Cannes available, offering friendly, charming, and comfortable lodgings.

Once your hotel accommodation is settled, you can then enjoy all that Cannes has to offer; including the supposedly haunted Tour du Masque, the Music of the World exhibition in the Musée de la Castre, and the Chapelle St-Sauveur, at the heart of the picturesque village of Le Cannet (about 3km away).

Overview

Overview

Sleek, sunny and celebrity-studded, this French Riviera city is a curving crescent of beaches, designer shops, art deco architecture and weather-beaten pétanque (French boules) players wedged between the Mediterranean and the back-county hills.

See

The 19th-century mansion of modern art, La Malmaison sits on La Croisette promenade with its pathway of celebrity handprints leading to the home of Cannes festivals, the Palais des Festivals. The fortress-like La Castre Castle looks down over Le Suquet's winding streets towards Forville Market's vegetable-sellers and fishmongers.

New

Hang out at the latest nightspots: the diminutive club Privé on Rue du Batéguier with its modernist white sofas and R'n'B ambience, or Palais on La Croisette, which opened in July 2006 to long queues of clubbers keen for a glimpse of the upbeat interiors and rooftop views over the Mediterranean.

Spend

Spend on designer labels from Chanel to Christian Lacroix on La Croisette, high-street fashion on Rue d'Antibes and bargain finds on Rue Meynadier. Fill up a basket with freshly caught fish, artichokes and pungent cheeses at Forville Market or flowers at Allées de la Liberté.

Get Out

On the Riviera's long, sunny days, sun worshippers head for Hotel Martinez for Cannes' largest beach or the Hotel Majestic beach for jet-skiing. Others escape to the shade of parks beneath the magnolias and cedars of René Cassin Square or the umbrella palms and tamarisk of Verdun Square.

Culture

On summer evenings, watch fireworks light up the Bay of Cannes or listen to open-air music. Go to the La Castre Museum's courtyard for classical concerts or the gardens of Villa Domergue for jazz. All year around, the Palais des Festivals welcomes ballet troupes and pop icons.

Eat & Drink

Cannes is a city for spring-to-autumn alfresco dining and coffee-drinking in cafés with tables spilling out on to wide pavements. Splash out on Michelin-starred food along La Croisette, posh Italian nosh around Rue du Commandant André, fish specialities on Quai Saint Pierre and Rue Félix Faure, or traditional French cuisine in Place du Suquet.

New Perspective

Enjoy 360° views of La Croisette promenade as you swing on the ancient carousel or look down over the city from beneath the linden trees in the old town's Place de la Castre.

Prepare

Prepare

Bring suntan lotion, a pair of designer sunglasses and bags of glamour. Borrow an open-topped sports car to arrive in style.

Cannes Year

Be ahead of the game with the latest trends at the Cannes Fashion Weekend (Jan), play Spot the Celebrity at the Cannes Film Festival (May), listen to classical music in an amphitheatre beneath the stars at Le Suquet's Nuits Musicales (Jul) and watch the Fireworks Festival light up the Bay of Cannes (Jul/Aug). Gaze at the floating palaces in the Vieux Port at the Yachting Festival in September.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day (1 Jan), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), Labour Day (1 May), Victory Day (8 May), Ascension (May), Pentecost (May), Whit Monday (May/June), Bastille Day (14 July), Assumption (15 August), All Saints Day (1 Nov), Armistice Day (11 November), Christmas Day (25 Dec).

Weather

Sheltered by the Alps, the coastline of the Cote d'Azur is characterised by hot, dry summers and mild, humid winters with few rainy days, almost no frost and rare snowfall. The sun shines for more than 3,000 hours per year. The average temperatures are 7°C in January and 23°C in July. Unless you are staying in a Vieux Mas (old Provencal farmhouse with thick walls), air-conditioned rooms are recommended during summer.

Fit In

Modesty is not a virtue in French Riviera attire. Think kitten heels and kaftans over your micro-bikini or even just bikini bottoms as you make your way to the beach along La Croisette. Elsewhere around Cannes, you should cover up a little more.

Get Around

Get Around

Explore the side streets of a sophisticated city where the sea is never too far away.

Wander along the lively avenue of La Croisette with designer shops on one side and sandy beaches on the other. Find bargains and an edgier side to the city in the busy streets around Rue Meynadier. Climb up the quiet, narrow lanes of Le Suquet to discover pastel-painted houses and pretty views. Smell the salty breeze as you admire the yachts along the Vieux Port or let your eyes get lost in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean from the Pointe Croisette peninsula.

Foot

Walking is often the quickest way to get about Cannes. Follow the autographed handprints along the Allée des Etoiles, meander along pedestrianised Rue Meynadier or relish the climb to Le Suquet.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available from Cannes train station. Otherwise, it is best to book taxis in advance rather than trying to hail one in the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations of local taxi companies.

Bus

Buses are reasonably priced, although they may not be the quickest way to travel during peak times. Bus Azur serves all areas of Cannes. It also runs an electric bus service from the town hall past La Croisette to the train station.

Motorised train

An effortless way to explore Cannes is to take a motorised Petit Train for a 40-minute guided tour. La Croisette train departs from La Croisette opposite La Galerie Gray d'Albion. Le Suquet train departs from the Palais des Festivals and tours the old town.

Transport Tips

Bus tickets can be bought at the bus station or various tabacs (tobacconists). Carte 10 gives 10 reduced-rate tickets, while Carte é-lo gives unlimited 1-day travel on é-lo, the electric bus. Driving can be tricky during summer as street parking is hard to find. It is best to park in a multi-storey car park and walk to your final destination.

Time Travel

Travel to Roman Cannes and glimpse a simpler way of life at the Romanesque Lérins Monastery on a boat trip to St Honorat Island. Spot pre-Columbian artefacts at the medieval La Castre Castle or art deco architecture along La Croisette.
