Overview

Overview

Montpellier's unique ambience is an amalgam of bustling university town, medieval centre of learning, 19th-century flamboyance, and progressive contemporary city. The brilliance of the Mediterranean sun on its gothic and neo-classical façades contrasts well with the city's up-tempo, can-do spirit.

See

Learn the story of the region in the Languedocien Museum. Move on to the Atger Museum, replete with pre-modern masterpieces. The Peyrou Royal Square is book-ended by the Triumph Arch and the Water Tower, leading to the 18th-century St-Clément Aqueduct.

Spend

Montpellier city centre is dotted with boutique stores, some selling fashion brands known the world over, and others one-off stores selling specialities where you can stock up on local wine, cheeses, hams and conserves. The wines of Languedoc have traditionally been undervalued, but the region is now one of the most innovative in France.

Get Out

Soothe the claustrophobe in you with Montpellier's wide-open spaces. Wander the tree- and park-lined Boulevard Charles de Gaulle. Cross town to the Place Royale du Peyrou (Peyrou Royal Square), bordered with the plane trees redolent of France's south. Just to its north is the Jardin des Plantes, or Botanical Gardens. Beaches, the rugged Camargue region and the Cévennes wilderness wait for you outside the town.

Culture

Montpellier's magnificent Opéra-Comédie is the legacy of its 19th-century winemaking prosperity. The theatre is now the heart of the city's busy cultural life. Hear classical music here and at intimate spots throughout the city centre. Join a larger crowd at the modern Corum, Montpellier's main concert venue.

Eat & Drink

Wherever there is a place (square) in medieval Montpellier there is a cluster of restaurants and cafés offering something delectable. Try tête de veau (ox cheek), or cassoulet (meat and bean stew) or cepe (mushroom) pasta with a delicious Languedoc wine in Place de la Comédie, Place Jean Jaurès, Place de la Chapelle Neuve, Place Candolle, or Place du Marché.

New Perspective

Jump aboard one of Montpellier's 21st-century trams and take in the medieval city from the air-conditioned comfort of your seat.

Prepare

Prepare

Bring your sandals and an appetite – and a well-developed hankering for red wine wouldn't go astray. Get your cowboy hat on for venturing into rugged Carmargue.

Fit In

The beautiful locals of Montpellier are a fashion-conscious bunch. Dress stylishly yet casually to compete, remembering that dress colour varies not just from year to year but from season to season. Men from le Midi (southern France) wear pastels.

Highlights

Highlights

Montpellier's medieval centre – with its museums, monuments to a stormy past, and manicured gardens – is as young in spirit as it is old in years.

When wandering the streets and sitting in cafés no longer suffices, take yourself on a tour of local history at the Languedocien Museum and the Museum of Old Montpellier. Art lovers will while away hours in the Fabre Museum and Atger Museum. Take a stroll from the pompous Arc de Triomphe (Triumph Arch) along the Peyrou Royal Square, towards the 18th-century Château d'Eau (Water Tower) and its adjoining aqueduct. Spend a lazy afternoon in the nearby Jardin des Plantes (Botanical Gardens) and view the twin towers of the St Pierre Cathedral.
