Overview

Overview

With its Roman ruins, Renaissance quarter and Michelin-star-studded restaurants, Lyon is a hot date. The city nestles alongside the Fourvière and Croix-Rousse hills, the Rhone and Sâone rivers snake through its core and history runs through its veins.

See

Discover Latin Lyon (Lugdunum) at the Roman ruins of Fourvière Hill before taking in city-wide views from the hilltop Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Appreciate Italianate architecture and shady courtyards while you ramble the cobbled streets of the UNESCO-listed Vieux Lyon (old town). Just north of here is the centre of Lyon's silk industry La Croix-Rousse. Ancient Egyptian and Greek artwork is exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts.

Spend

Pick up designer wear on smart Rue Emile Zola , eat chocolate-covered marzipan Coussins de Lyon (Lyon cushions) on Rue de la Charité or snap up some St Marcellin cheese at the open-air markets on Quai St-Antoine every morning except Monday. Lyon is bordered by the Beaujolais, Côteaux du Lyonnais and Côtes du Rhône vineyards – bag a bottle or two on Rue de Boeuf.

Get Out

Wander the cobble-stoned Renaissance-era paths and courtyards of Vieux Lyon but be sure not to get lost in the maze of covered walkways ( traboules ) which were used as escape routes for the French Resistance during World War II. Take a picnic to the contemporary Parc de la Tête d'Or or catch some rays among the sculptures of French nobility at the Jardin des Plantes . The action-packed Mirabel-Jonage Parc is a plum spot for cycling, golf and watersports.

Culture

Visit the Jean Nouvel-designed Opéra National de Lyon or explore Lyon's history at the refurbished Musée Gadagne. Contemporary dance is performed at the Maison de la Danse and Guignol puppet shows (the original Punch and Judy, created in Lyon), at Théâtre le Guignol de Lyon.

Eat & Drink

Even Parisians admit that Lyon is France's gastronomic capital and Paul Bocuse, whose 3 Michelin stars sparkle at L’Auberge du Pont de Collange (in Collonges-au-Mont-d’Or, 15 minutes from the centre), is the city's best known chef. Sample local flavours in the convivial bouchons taverns on Rue du Garet. Favourites are quenelles dumplings for soaking up the sauce of fish from the Savoy lakes, wild game from the Dombes and Cervelle de Canuts – a soft cheese with garlic and herbs. A fine accompaniment is a generous jug of Lyon's own Beaujolais Village or Côtes du Rhône.

New Perspective

See Lyon sparkle each night when 100,000 projectors illuminate 325 sites including the city's town hall, bridges, universities and parks. The initiative is part of the Plan Lumière scheme, designed to showcase the city's vast heritage.

Fit In

From the sharp suits of financial Place de la Bourse to the effortless student cool around arty Croix-Rousse, Lyon is a real fashion mish-mash. Mingle with the neatly chic on designer-conscious Rue Emile Zola but be sure to accessorise - the Lyonnais love their bags, hats and scarves.

Get Around

Get Around

Although Lyon is France's second city, its actual centre is quite compact and can be easily navigated on foot. Vieux Lyon is home to Europe's largest Renaissance quarter.

In the centre, find green Presqu'ile, which sits between Lyon's two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône. West across the Saône lies the Renaissance Vieux Lyon (old town) with its age-old towers and narrow cobbled streets leading to Italianate courtyards. The whole quarter is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. North lies arty Croix-Rousse with its bars, restaurants and traboules – fascinating covered passageways which connect different buildings and streets. In east Lyon is brasserie-lined Brotteaux and south the modern Part-Dieu.

Foot

The best way to appreciate Lyon's rich history is by foot. Amble around the narrow streets of cobbled Vieux Lyon taking in the Renaissance architecture and traverse the Roman ruins on Fourvière Hill. Walk through one of the city's longest traboules, or covered passageways, from 33 Rue Royale to 7 Rue Mottet-de-Gérando in Croix Rousse.

Métro

Lyon's clean and reliable Métro system is the most convenient way to hop from one district to another. Buy tickets individually or in books of ten (carnets) to travel on the four lines serving the city's centre.

Tramway

Lyon also has four tram lines. Line T1 slices through the centre, past Gare Part-Dieu on a north-south axis. You can use Métro tickets on all trams.

Taxi

Grab a ride at a cab-stand or simply hail a taxi on the street. Take a speedy guided tour of the city in one of Lyon's many tourist taxis with English-speaking drivers.

Bus

Lyon's red and white buses travel along 70 separate routes in and around the city. Although not as quick as the Métro system, the bus network is cheaper.

Transport Tips

Buy a carnet of ten Métro tickets from any train station, or a Ticket Liberté day pass to save on fares. Alternatively pick up a Lyon City Card from one of the city's tourism offices for full use of Lyon's public transport system for up to three days. Driving in Lyon is not as challenging as in Paris but beware, parking spaces are scarce during the week, and the Croix-Rousse's sloping one-way streets can be tricky.

Time Travel

See the vestiges of Lyon's original Roman city Lugdunum on Fourvière Hill or step back into the 15th century in Renaissance Vieux Lyon. The gothic St Nizier Church and the baroque St Bruno des Chartreux Church hark back to the city's religious past. Marvel at the neo-classical, Jean Nouvel-designed Lyon Opera House in the city centre.
