Overview

Overview

Charismatic and chaotic, India's commercial capital combines cheerful enterprise, poverty, fine cuisine and vibrant markets. With its glorious colonial structures, ornate temples, lively festivals and obsession with film stars, Mumbai is a cultural phenomenon that has to be sampled.

See

Cricketers play on the maidans in front of the imposing High Court, and Chowpatty Beach comes alive at night when everyone descends for fairground rides and food. By the city's iconic Gateway of India, boats leave for the rock-carved temple caves on Elephanta Island.

Spend

Find antiques and curios in Chor Bazaar, gold in Zaveri Bazaar and hand-spun silks in Gandhi Bazaar. For high-street fashion try Linking Road in Bandra, nearby Juhu Tara Road for Indian designer wear, and bargain basement clothes in Churchgate's Fashion Street. Haggle your way to a hard-earned handicraft and bargain souvenir in Colaba Causeway.

Get Out

Locals flock to Chowpatty Beach to watch the perfect sunset and eat away from the city's heat. Welcome the cool breeze at the Hanging Gardens on top of posh Malabar Hill, or join in with the sporting obsession by watching cricket at Brabourne Stadium or Azad Maidan.

Culture

Traditional dance, experimental theatre and Indian classical music can all be experienced at the National Centre for Performing Arts, hub of Mumbai's cultural scene. The annual Kala Ghoda Festival showcases local and national music and dance, and temples fill with devotional music during Hindu festivals.

Eat & Drink

From tasty local snacks like bhelpuri on Chowpatty beach to Mediterranean feasts in swanky Pali Hill, Mumbai has some of the best food in India. Try Colaba for hearty tandoori and relaxing cafés, busy Fort for fresh seafood and thalis, and Bandra for south Indian and ultra-cool Italian.

New Perspective

After wolfing down bhelpuri from the food stalls, brave the human-powered big wheel on Chowpatty Beach and, from the top, get the best view of the sands, sea, stalls and bright lights of Marine Drive.

Prepare

Arm yourself with sunblock, a taste for spices and light comfortable walking shoes. Swot up on the latest Indian cricket and movie stars and get ready to make plenty of friends.

Fit In

Local women wear jeans and t-shirts in liberal Mumbai as well as cool shalwar kameez – follow suit by covering knees and shoulders when sightseeing. Miniskirts are fine for clubs, while bejewelled saris twinkle in top restaurants. Anything goes for a night out!

Get Around

Get Around

Bordering the Arabian Sea with its famous coastline, Mumbai and its suburbs stretch to the north, but most of your travelling will be in the south.

Most of Mumbai's history and entertainment are packed into the south, but the local train makes it easy to travel to the fashionable northern suburbs.

In the south find Victoriana in arty Fort, Churchgate's cricket grounds, and shopping and nightlife in Colaba. The centre has Mahalaxmi racecourse and temples; Chowpatty Beach and graceful Malabar Hill lie in the west. Head north for high-street fashion in busy Bandra, and glamorous cocktails in Juhu.

Taxi

Mumbai's yellow-and-black taxis are cheap, convenient and everywhere. Most drivers put on the meter, insist if they don't. Air-con taxis are blue and cost around double. Always get a pre-paid taxi from the airport and ignore drivers who insist your hotel is closed – and any offers to see his cousin's carpet shop.

Train

Catch the suburban line going north from Churchgate or north-east from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (VT) to cut out the traffic. The cheap, frequent services are ideal for destinations like mid-town Bandra. First-class and women's carriages are slightly less crowded, but all are horribly packed at rush hour.

Foot

Get a real feel for the crowded city streets by exploring Fort, Churchgate and the market areas on foot. Fort Walks is a handy book of walking tours in the area, available from local bookshops.

Autorickshaw

Three-wheeled motorised autorickshaws are available in the central suburbs, and not allowed in the south. Cheaper than taxis, they are good for short journeys. Always have the meter put on, the final amount to be calculated with a conversion chart to current rates, as with taxis.

Bus

Although very slow, the top deck of a double-decker bus is always a great way to travel, and also the cheapest. Like other public transport, try to avoid jam-packed rush hours.

Transport Tips

Avoid rush hours (8am-10am, 5pm-8pm) when it's hard to find space to breathe on the train and traffic moves at a snail's pace. Allow plenty of time in the taxi if catching a flight or train. Take care of valuables on trains and women should spend a few rupees extra to make use of the first-class ladies' compartments.

Time Travel

Sail back to the fifth century, wandering inside the huge rock-cut temples of Elephanta Island; gaze up at the Gothic tower of Bombay University, the best of British India; pay your respects to one of the 20th century's greatest figures at Mani Bhawan, home of Mahatma Gandhi.

Highlights

Highlights

Mumbai looks overpowering when you gaze from the Gateway of India, but many of the sights in the south can be explored on foot.

Get a sense of the city's colonial history in Colaba and Fort, home to the iconic Gateway of India and ornate High Court, and see ancient sculptures and miniature paintings in the Chhatrapati Shivaji Museum in Kala Ghoda.

Along the glorious coastline, eat speciality Mumbai snacks on Chowpatty Beach and join everyone out to play at sunset. At low tide watch Muslim pilgrims visit Haji Ali's Tomb along the packed causeway that winds into the Arabian Sea, then follow Hindus offering puja (worship) at Mahalaxmi Temple.

Sightseeing Tips

Museums don't stay open late so get there in the morning, when you'll beat the crowds and heat, and avoid weekends. Street markets come to life in the late afternoon and stay open most of the evening. Save the beach till the evening, as swimming is off the agenda here and it's far more entertaining when everyone comes out to enjoy the cool air.
