Overview

Israel's capital is crammed with 3,000 years of history, its Old City walls containing some of the world's most sacred sites. The steps of Christ, the Wailing Wall's fervent worshippers and the gleaming Dome of the Rock make up Jerusalem's allure, together with vibrant markets and stylish nightlife.

See

The golden Dome of the Rock glows amid the roofs of the Old City, where the pious pray at the Wailing Wall (Western Wall). Christianity's first churches cluster and photo ops abound on the Mount of Olives, while modern sculpture dominates at the Israel Museum. Venerated history comes alive in Jerusalem.

New

Cut it with the in-crowd at latest hotspot The Old Train Station compound, or eat with those in the know on up-and-coming Aza Street. Visit the futuristic Yad Vashem New Holocaust Museum for powerful state-of-the-art views of harrowing history.

Spend

Pick up all things religious – from the kitsch to the classy – in the alleys of The Old City, while Mea Shearim is a jewel for Judaica. Create a unique look with handcrafted jewellery and designer clothes from boutiques lining The German Colony and Nachalat Shiva.

Get Out

Jerusalemites make for parks and gardens to unwind. Pack a picnic for Liberty Bell Park near Montefiore's Windmill, or fountain-filled Independence Park. Active types head to tennis courts and the swimming pool at the Jerusalem Forest, or roller-skating at Sacher Park. In the city, locals love hanging out at Nachalat Shiva's outdoor cafés.

Culture

Summer nights fill with the sounds of open-air concerts at Sultan's Pool, while the Jerusalem Centre for the Performing Arts is a hothouse for innovative music, video art and dance. Kids – and adults too – will love the puppet performance at the Train Theatre located in Liberty Bell Park.

Eat & Drink

Cuisine-crazy Jerusalem is packed with top-end eateries and tasty street food. For fresh hummus, falafel and shish kebabs, stop off on Aza Road. Trawl the cobblestone streets of Nachla'ot and Nachalat Shiva for everything from ethnic veggie to Mediterranean gourmet. Try Korean on Salomon Street and New York-style sushi on Jaffa Road.

New Perspective

For a truly holy experience, visit the Wailing Wall (Western Wall) at night, when the white-stone courtyard is bathed in moonlight.

Prepare

Prepare

Pack plenty of patience and modest clothes in preparation for the Holy City. Make sure your walking shoes are resoled and your camera batteries charged.

Jerusalem Year

Dance in the street in May to celebrate Jerusalem Day. Quaff vintage grapes at the Wine Festival in July, then catch top flicks at the Film Festival. Jive during September's Jazz Festival or tune in to Arabic lutes at October's International Oud Festival. In December, eat doughnuts and watch the city light up for candle-filled Chanukah.

Public Holidays

Purim (Feb/Mar), Pesach - Passover (Mar/Apr), Independence Day (May), Shavuot - Pentecost (May/Jun), Tisha B'Av - Fast of the month of Av (Jul/Aug), Rosh Hashanah - Jewish New Year (Sep/Oct), Yom Kippur - Day of Atonement and fasting (Sep/Oct), Succot - Tabernacles (Sep/Oct).

Weather

January and February are the coldest months (-2°C to -10°C) when snow can add a magical charm to the city. Autumn is warm and comfortable, as are the spring months, with the highest temperatures in July and August (28°C to 32°C). Jerusalem's hilly climes ease the heat and make for an airy and relatively sweat-free summer.

Electricity

230V AC, 50 Hz, two-pin plugs are standard.

Dialling Code

+972 (Israel), (0) 2 + seven-figure number (Jerusalem).

Money

New Israeli Shekel (NIS) is the currency.

Fit In

In this religious melting pot, modesty is the motto, with covered arms and legs expected in the Old City and total body cover-up in ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim. Secular Jerusalem is more liberal, so casual-elegant garb will blend in with boho types in Nachalat Shiva and Nachla'ot. Arty abandon is a hit with the hip German Colony crowd.

Get Around

Get Around

Jerusalem's puzzle-piece topography can seem confusing, but the city is distinctly divided into Old City, New City (west) and East Jerusalem, each with its own distinct flavour.

The Old City is enclosed by 16th-century walls, and is huddled between the Jerusalem Forest to the west and the eastern Mount of Olives.

In the centre, find the boutique bastion of Nachalat Shiva and vibrant Mahane Yehuda. Travelling west through sophisticated Nachla'ot with its colourful murals reaches academic Givat Ram and Museum Row. In the Arabic east, find the Old World Sheikh Jarrah area, and panoramic views from Mount Scopus and the Mount of Olives. Head south through the trend-setting German Colony for a night out in dance-crazy Talpiot.

Foot

Walking is the best way to negotiate Jerusalem's narrow winding streets, and to soak up the sights up close. A walk along the rampart walls or a stroll down Haas Promenade offers great views of the Old City.

Taxi

The drivers of the white cabs are knowledgeable and proud ambassadors of their city, and happy to impart what they know. Make sure they put the meter on – it's the law.

Bus

Buses provide a cheaper alternative to taxis if going across town. Egged operates a decent system of bus lines across the city and offers tours of the Old City.

Transport Tips

Buy weekly, monthly or ten-ride cartisiya passes from the driver, but given the recent bad history of buses in the conflict, it is often safer to take a taxi. Driving is not recommended, as Jerusalem is notoriously lacking in sign posts.

Time Travel

Take a walk up the Cardo, the reconstructed 6th-century main street of Roman and Byzantine Jerusalem and whizz through 3,000 years of history with the ultra-modern 3D special effects of the Time Elevator.

Highlights

Highlights

The holy sites for the world's three great religions rub shoulders in the Old City. Beyond its 16th-century walls, a modern metropolis thrives alongside 3,000 years of history.

Enter the Old City through the elaborate Damascus Gate and follow Christ's final steps on the Via Dolorosa to the ornate Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Gaze upon the 24-carat-gilded Dome of the Rock and the silver-domed Al-Aqsa Mosque on Temple Mount, and place a prayer in the cracks of the Wailing Wall (Western Wall).

Head west for Museum Row, including the Israel Museum, with the onion-shaped Shrine of the Book, and Bible Lands Museum filled with Ramses riches. Beyond western Mount Herzl on the fringes of leafy Jerusalem Forest, Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum illustrates chilling history.

Sightseeing Tips

Some museums are open late, including Bible Lands Museum (closes 9.30pm on Wednesday) and Israel Museum (9pm on Thursday). Museums are closed on Friday afternoons, Saturdays and holidays. Religious sites close on their respective Sabbaths: Christian – Sunday; Muslim – Friday; Jewish - Saturday (although not the Wailing Wall).
