Overview

Overview

Known as Little Rome, Verona is an elegant city jammed with remarkable monuments, nestled in a bend of the Adige River. Rome's glory is reflected in the splendour of Verona's Arena, scene of summer opera extravaganzas.

See

For the romantic at heart, a visit to Shakespearian heroine Juliet's House is mandatory. From fiction to history, a visit to the mighty Roman Arena is next. The city is laced with fine churches, the most extraordinary of which is the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore, outside the centre. On the river stands the fortress-turned-museum of Castelvecchio.

Spend

Verona's high street, Via Mazzini, is lined with the best names in Italian fashion, from Diesel to Versace, along with several designer furniture and home ware shops. Off on the side streets you will turn up the occasional gem, including some marvellous food and wine shops that sell local produce.

Get Out

A stroll along either bank of the Adige river, especially on a moonlit evening, is both restorative and romantic. Hike up to the Austrian-built castle of Castel San Pietro on the east bank for wonderful views across the city below. Lago di Garda, 30km west and one of northern Italy's most enticing lakes, is a favourite target for weekend excursions.

Culture

After the tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet, Verona is known all over the world for the spectacular summer opera season at the 1st-century Arena, the third largest Roman amphitheatre in the world. Book well ahead.

Eat & Drink

The Veneto region boasts several specialities, including the ubiquitous semolina-based polenta, usually served with meat. Follow with a rich tiramisù dessert. Verona is at the heart of great wine-making areas and produces notable Soave whites and Bardolino reds, not to mention Hemingway's favourite, Valpolicella. Fine, cavernous restaurants are scattered across the centre of the city with a few across the river in the streets around Piazza dell'Isolo.

New Perspective

Hike up to the Castel San Pietro castle on the east side of the Adige river and enjoy views across the entire old city.

Prepare

Prepare

Have a read of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet before heading out to Verona. Be prepared for fine wining and dining and bring a comfortable pair of shoes.

Verona Year

The first big event of the year occurs during February's otherwise understated Carnival. It is the Bacanal del Gnoco, a colourful costume and mask parade that winds its way around central Verona. September is a good time, as many of the city's districts celebrate local sagre, which generally involve much eating and drinking in the streets.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day, Epiphany (6 Jan), Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), Liberation Day (25 Apr), May Day (1 May), Ferragosto (15 Aug), All Saints (1 Nov), Immaculate Conception (8 Dec), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Boxing Day (26 Dec).

Weather

A good time to visit can be January-February, when the mercury lies around 0°C – 7°C. Tourists are comparatively scarce and although it's chilly, skies are a marvellous blue. Otherwise, spring is the ideal time to be here with its balmy days. High summer (July-August) can be stifling with average temperatures above 30ºC. Rain can strike in spring and is near guaranteed in November.

220V AC, 50 Hz, two-pin plugs are standard.

Fit In

Verona is a wealthy town and its inhabitants ooze style. They like to be seen in their best threads, especially when sauntering down Via Mazzini in search of more threads. Labels are all important. For men, the shaven head and designer-cut beard seem almost standard, and big sunglasses are in for everyone.

Highlights

Highlights

Verona is a compact concentration of history and culture, with its massive Roman Arena, splendid churches and medieval core.

Once through the city gates at Piazza Brà, behold the mighty Roman Arena. If possible, book a night at the opera there in summer. Follow chic Via Mazzini to the market square, Piazza delle Erbe, which is lined with centuries-old frescoed mansions. From here it's a quick stroll to Juliet's House, while Piazza dei Signori lies at the very heart of the medieval city. Look for the Arche Scaligere, the tomb memorial of the Scaligeri family that long ruled the city.

All around are scattered magnificent churches. In addition to the Duomo (Cathedral), a Romanesque-Gothic hybrid, make an effort to seek out the Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore; a Romanesque masterpiece, it houses some extraordinary frescoes.

Sightseeing Tips

If you plan to stay in Verona for a few days and do the sights, pick up a Verona Welcome Card, which offers discounts on many sights in and around the city, as well as in some restaurants and attractions on the Lago di Garda. There is also a combined ticket for the city's most important churches - and there are quite a few!
