Overview

Overview

The ‘City of Sails' is easy-going and welcoming and thrives upon the cultural fusion of Pacific influences. Its bustling inner city core gives way to a vast urban spread that offers something different in every direction. Beyond that are surf beaches, extinct volcanoes and island retreats.

See

The space-age Sky Tower and cutting-edge Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World put the ‘new' in New Zealand but the city still respects its past. The Auckland Museum preserves Maori artefacts and the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum celebrates the history of an island nation. Take a boat trip to Waiheke Island or climb Mount Eden.

Spend

Pick up trendy clubbing gear or explore cutting-edge galleries in the vibrant Karangahape Road (K' Road). Buy sophisticated clothing from the boutiques of The Chancery, Vulcan Lane and High Street or in inner city suburbs like Parnell and Ponsonby. Find Polynesian and Maori items such as carvings and floral-print fabrics at the Otara Markets on Saturdays in South Auckland.

Get Out

New Zealanders relish the great outdoors. Unwind or get active in the charming gardens and sports fields in The Domain, Auckland's oldest park, explore the Maori volcanic cone fortress in One Tree Hill and Cornwall Park, the city's largest swathe of greenery, rollerblade, cycle or take up watersports at Mission Bay.

Culture

Polynesian arts make their mark and exist comfortably alongside ballet, drama and music. THE EDGE is New Zealand’s leading performing arts centre combining venues like The Civic – for theatre, dance and film, and the Aotea Centre.

Eat & Drink

From laid-back bars to high-class restaurants, there is no shortage of places to eat with a broad range of international cuisine. Stylish eateries crowd the harbour's edge at The Viaduct, while Ponsonby Road is a leading gastronomic haunt. Parnell Road embraces upmarket restaurants and cheaper alternatives, and Devonport is increasingly popular.

New Perspective

Sign up for the Vertigo Climb – an ascent up the inside of the Sky Tower mast to a crow's nest 270 metres above the city.

Fit In

New Zealanders have few airs and graces. Summer sees shorts, sunhat and sandals, while fleece and waterproofs are the winter uniform. Accessorise with an umbrella, whatever the season.

Highlights

Highlights

Auckland covers a huge area but offers plenty more space to breathe than comparably sized cities such as Greater London.

Ride and climb to the top of the 328-metre Sky Tower, then take a skyjump from the roof of the southern hemisphere's tallest building. Calm the adrenalin rush with lunch and wine at the nearby Viaduct, promenade among the harbour's state-of-the-art yachts then explore the boats of yesteryear at the Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum. Climb Auckland Harbour Bridge or take a ferry from the end of Queen Street for a stroll around historic Devonport or a closer look at the Hauraki Gulf Islands.

Sightseeing Tips

Both the Auckland Museum and Auckland Art Gallery exhibit Pacific culture, and feature regular exhibitions and live performances. An Auckland Multipass grants access to Kelly Tarlton's Antarctic Encounter, the Sky Tower, Rainbow's End and Rangitoto Island.
