Overview

Please note, following the earthquake in Christchurch on 21 February, it is not yet known which of the city’s attractions will remain open in 2011.

With its extensive gardens, Victorian architecture and genteel way of life, Christchurch has a distinctly English vibe. Locals are fans of the great outdoors, making the most of the city's warm summers and surrounding areas of natural beauty.

See

Christchurch is all about life in the outdoors. Shiver in the International Antarctic Centre's mock blizzard and explore the lush Botanic Gardens. Sit in Cathedral Square or climb the 133 steps to the top of Christchurch Cathedral Clock Tower to admire the views of the city.

New

The Christchurch Art Gallery in Gloucester Street is a bold new architectural space showcasing home grown and international work. Take a ride on the new 16-seat Hagglund tracked snow vehicle at the International Antarctic Centre.

Spend

Find essential outdoor gear at stores like Kathmandu and Snow Gum on Lichfield Street and Colombo Street. Get sheepskin, wool and leather goods from Mi Woollies on Worcester Street. For contemporary arts and crafts along with local produce, the Arts Centre hosts a buzzing market each Sunday. Try Centre of Christchurch on Worcester Boulevard for Maori crafts.

Get Out

With more than 700 parks it's no wonder Christchurch is known as the garden city. Stroll among indigenous plants at the Botanic Gardens or kick a rugby ball at Hagley Park. Drive out of town to swim in the sea, fish off New Brighton Pier, or enjoy a spot of whale watching.

Culture

Go to an evening concert at traditional Maori venue Nga Hau E Wha National Marae (Marae of the Four Winds) or see an avant-garde show at the Court Theatre. For a historical overview visit the Canterbury Museum or get hands-on learning to weave, bone carve or do the Haka at Creative Tourism workshops.

Eat & Drink

Gourmands love the region's lamb, fresh crayfish and wines. In Christchurch hang out with the hip crowd in pavement cafés on Oxford Terrace beside the Avon River or go upmarket around Cathedral Square. Sample local wines at the nearby Opihi vineyards and eat seasonal specialities in cellar door restaurants.

New Perspective

Take a picnic and a bottle of wine to Port Hills and watch the sun set over the Canterbury Plains, with the breathtaking backdrop of the Southern Alps.

Fit In

High style and high heels don't really cut the mustard in Christchurch. It's a sporting town and dress codes are suitably casual. Your outdoor gear will be rigorously assessed; rugby shirts are de rigeur and jeans acceptable almost everywhere.
