Overview

Overview

The picturesque Norwegian coastal city of Bergen is dotted with quaint wooden houses and set against a backdrop of steep mountains and deep fjords. Step into the saga of Bergen, a city of smiling townsfolk and natural wonders.

See

Multi-coloured wooden Hanseatic houses dot the seafront of the old town, the world heritage site Bryggen, some of them dating back to the 14th century. The Fløibanen funicular chugs up to the top of Fløyfjellet mountain, with vistas of the fjords, while Bergen aquarium provides views of the oceans from beneath. High mountains and deep seas is what Bergen is all about.

New

Hang out in one of the several new, hip venues that have sprung up around Ole Bull's Pass. Party in style at the glamorous Feliz nightclub, or catch a play at Ole Bull Scene.

Spend

Find chunky, patterned lusekofte jumpers and traditional handicrafts, along with North Sea delicacies, at the colourful Fisketorget market. Head to classy Sandviken and Steinkjellergaten for small designer boutiques selling Norwegian and international fashions, jewellery and accessories or shop for high-street names in the city centre malls.

Get Out

Catch a boat into Sognefjord, passing dramatic cliffs and waterfalls, to see the glaciers of the high mountains as they reunite with the ocean. Closer at hand, gaze out over the fjords and Bergen city from Fløyfjellet mountain, accessible from the centre by the Fløibanen funicular. Once there, join the locals on a hike through the mountain trails, for a taste of that healthy Norwegian rosy-cheek feeling.

Culture

Walk in the footsteps of 19th-century composer Edvard Grieg. Concerts are arranged at his former home Troldhaugen as well as in the culture centre Grieghallen. Grieg's classical music tradition is also upheld by students at the renowned music school Grieg Academy, who put on regular concerts. The expressionist art of Grieg's namesake, Edvard Munch, is on display at Bergen Art Museum.

Eat & Drink

With the North Sea at its doorstep, Bergen's dining is all about fish and seafood. Try flounder, or, if you are brave, the smelly local fish Lutfisk. Whale steak also appears on some menus. Find a romantic hideaway among one of the traditional Bergen restaurants along Bryggen or choose the international cuisine of your choice at diverse Kong Oscars gate.

New Perspective

If you've had enough of healthy outdoors activities, take a peek behind the doors of the 18th-century leprosy hospital, now the Bergen Leprosy Museum.

Prepare

Prepare

Bring your walking boots and windproof jacket to take advantage of Bergen's outdoorsy attractions.

Bergen Year

Tune into the Borealis contemporary music festival in March. In May, hop between plays, music performances and dance shows at the one-week Festspillen cultural festival or come out at Bergen Gay Pride Festival. Let out your inner savage at the Viking and Medieval Festival in June or let your hair down at the Lost Weekend rock festival in August. In September, join cartoon enthusiasts from around the world for the Raptus Comics Festival, and parade through town along with Mickey Mouse and Betty Boop.

Weather

The months between May and August are the warmest (16–27° C) while the winter - between December and March - see temperatures as low as –20°C. The sports-mad Norwegians rarely let the cold temperature keep them indoors: in the winter, cross-country and downhill skiing replace the summer's mountain hikes.

Electricity

220V AC, 50 Hz, two-pin plugs are standard.

Dialling Code

+47 (national), (0)55 (Bergen).

Money

Norwegian kroner (NOK) is the currency.

GMT

GMT +1 (+2 in summertime).

Highlights

Highlights

Bergen is the entry-point for excursions into the Norwegian fjords - start here to see the coastline for which earth-designer Slartibartfast won awards in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

By the waterfront, stroll through a fairytale at Bryggen, a world heritage site dotted with colourful wooden houses. Alternatively, catch the Fløibanen funicular for a spectacular ride up to the top of Fløyfjellet mountain, with views of the fjords, or join one of many tour companies departing excursions into Sognefjord where the glaciers meet the ocean among dramatic cliff drops and waterfalls.

In the centre of town, see the art of Munch and Picasso at Bergen Art Museum or wander through the botanical gardens of the Bergen Museum, which also has an extensive history exhibition. Find queer fish at Bergen Aquarium or enter the former home of composer Edvard Grieg at Troldhaugen.

Sightseeing Tips

The Bergen card provides free admission or discounts on entrance fees to most museums and key sights, as well as free transport on the city's buses.
