Overview

Overview

Scratch the surface of brash, modern Lima and the pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial past shows its face. One of the oldest cities in the Americas, Lima is an essential stop on any tour of Peru.

See

The city's heart since the times of the conquistadors has been the Plaza Mayor, but the cream of the country's ancient artefacts are found in the Museo de la Nacion. Pre-Columbian pyramids - the sacred huacas - are still scattered around Lima, with the most impressive on the outskirts at Pachacamac.

Spend

For a cornucopia of Peruvian crafts from alpaca knitwear to Nazca ceramics, head to the cluster of market stalls and stores on Avenida Petit Thouars in Miraflores. The neighourhood plaza here is also a good place to pick up cheap jewellery or artwork. For something more upmarket, the vast Jockey Plaza mall is lined with exclusive boutiques and major department stores.

Get Out

Those in the know avoid Lima's less than idyllic beach and make for the bohemian ambience of the Barranco neighbourhood. Pretty parks, cobbled streets and a river crossed by the Puente de Suspiro (Bridge of Sighs) are popular with strolling couples and families, well catered for by wandering ice-cream sellers.

Culture

Dance to Afro Peruvian beats with an evening of peñas folk music in bohemian Barranco and smart Miraflores. Wash down with beer and criollo snacks. Alternatively, watch ballet dancers twirl to the sound of the national symphony orchestra at the Museo de la Nacion.

Eat & Drink

Lima's proximity to the sea makes this the best place in Peru to try the famous ceviche - seafood marinated in lime juice, served with onions, Peruvian aji pepper and camote sweet potato. Upper class Miraflores has the pick of the city's dining establishments, while the pizzerias of Barranco have a more laid-back vibe. San Isidro has a cluster of healthy lunch spots.

New Perspective

Watch hang-gliders flying over Miraflores and the nearby cliffs and beach from near the entrance of the Larcomar complex. Join them if you want to be swept off your feet by an unparalleled view of the Pacific.

Prepare

Prepare

Put away those trekking boots. In Lima, smart and stylish is what everyone's wearing.

Lima Year

The year kicks off with the Semana de Lima (12-19 Jan), with open-air performances in the summer sunshine in celebration of the city's founding in 1535. See the beautiful purebred Peruvian paso horses at the May Peruvian Paso gymkhana in Pachacamac, and celebrate Peruvian Independence (28-29 Jul). Lima's biggest annual shindig is the show-stopping Señor de los Milagros in October, where thousands of the faithful don purple for a huge religious procession. November sees the Feria del Señor de los Milagros bullfights.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday (Mar/Apr), Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Labour Day (1 May), St Peter &St Paul (29 Jun), Independence Day (28-29 Jul), St Rosa of Lima Day (30 Aug), Battle of Angamos (8 Oct), All Saints' Day (1 Nov), Immaculate Conception (8 Dec), Christmas Day (25 Dec).

Weather

Lima is at its best during the southern summer (Dec-Mar), when the weather is sunny and hot (26°C). The rest of the year the sun is covered by Lima's famous garua, a steady cloud caused by the Pacific Humboldt current, but this very rarely results in rain – even in winter (Jun-Sep) temperatures average out at 19°C.

Electricity

220V AC, 60 Hz, twin flat or round plugs are standard.

Dialling Code

+51 (national), (0) 1 + 7-figure number (Lima).

Money

Nuevo soles (S) is the currency, often referred to simply as soles.

"Scruffy" and "baggy" are not words in the limeño vocabulary. Dress is smart by day, glamorous (and tight-fitting) by night.

Highlights

Highlights

The "City of Kings" has been one of the most important places in the Americas since it was founded in 1535. Find out why in its historic museums.

Clustered around the Plaza Mayor in the city centre, you'll find many of Lima's historical attractions, including the Cathedral, the Inquisition Museum and the vast Catacombs under the San Francisco Monastery. Museums stuffed with the treasures of ancient, pre-Columbian Peru are numerous - the best is Museo de la Nacion.

Find remnants of Inca civilization still splashed around modern Lima, the most notable site being windswept Pachacamac about 30km south of the city.

Sightseeing Tips

Lima's many colonial-era churches, as well as some of its other attractions, take a siesta between 1pm-3pm. Time your visit to the Plaza Mayor for 11.45am to catch the daily changing of the guards at the government palace.
