Hotels in the Old Town offer a unique experience - the chance to sleep in an area where nothing has changed for centuries, and be close to the main city beach and the city centre attractions at the same time. Ploce is the most elite area in Dubrovnik, and the mainly luxury hotels here often have excellent views of the Old City or of Lokrum island and the open sea, although buses to the main city can be problematic. And in Pile, to the west, outside of the Old City, there are hotels with some beautiful settings; old restored hotels and those with stunning gardens. Gruz is the main bus terminal area, so is a good base for explorers, and Lapad Bay, not far from the Old Town, has plenty of accommodation away from the rush of the city, with access to many beaches and hidden coves.
Cheap hotels in Dubrovnik are available, but 'cheap' will be a relative term for some time until hotel provision expands and increases. Booking early, in the meantime, is very important.
