Overview

Once East Anglia's thriving port, famous for its wool, Ipswich is reinventing itself as a modern, stylish place with a new waterfront development, complete with marina. Suffolk's county town remains the ideal destination for exploring Constable country.

See

Admire late medieval oak-beamed and pargetted houses ("pargetting" is the ancient art of decorative outdoor plasterwork peculiar now to East Anglia), like Ancient House. Christchurch Mansion illustrates living over the ages, and houses, in the Wolsey Art Gallery Gainsboroughs and Constables. Real Constable Country is a stone's throw west at Flatford Mill.

New

Ipswich Waterfront attracts landlubber visitors and a changing flotilla of boats to the marina. Its regeneration ranges from penthouse flats to the steadily rising building at Cranfields' Mills - from 2008, Dance East's new home. University Campus Ipswich - a collaboration between the Universities of East Anglia and Essex – brings undergraduates to Ipswich in September 2007.

Spend

Don't expect to keep your wallet un-opened as you walk down Ipswich's golden mile of shops. Buy typical Suffolk crafts – corn dollies and wool – or delicacies from as far afield as Portugal and Poland.

Get Out

Your're never far from greenery in Ipswich. Christchurch Park stretches from north of Ipswich's medieval walls: its 400-year-old oaks could tell a story or two! The River Orwell, with its sleek bridge just east of Ipswich, offers fine walking, with Constable's Flatford Mill nearby. Aldeburgh and Southwold are to the east, on the Suffolk coast.

Culture

Take in a show at the New Wolsey Theatre, including its annual "rock 'n' roll pantomime. Alternatively head east to Aldeburgh's famous Snape Maltings concert hall, founded by Benjamin Britten, with its annual festivals including the Aldeburgh Proms, every night in August.

Eat & Drink

Seafood is more than a staple, with Ipswich a stone's throw from the sea. Oysters and fresh fish are the order of the day at new restaurants on the Ipswich Waterfront. Further afield, traditional fish and chips is no tastier than from Aldeburgh's Golden Galleon. Back in town, savour Indian, Thai, Italian and Chinese.

New Perspective

See hundreds of years of history, either walking through the themed rooms (Tudor to Edwardian) at Christchurch Mansion, or at the quayside, with its oak-beamed merchant's houses abutting new apartment blocks by the marina.

Prepare

Prepare

Take your camera to snap Constable Country and both the old and new in Ipswich itself. Take sturdy shoes for walking and deck shoes if you're boating.

Ipswich Year

See off the Ipswich to Felixstowe Historic Vehicle Run from Christchurch Park in May and revel in the annual Ip-Art Festival (late Jun - early Jul). Up the coast enjoy Aldeburgh Festival in June and Latitude Festival in Southwold in July. Listen to the Aldeburgh Proms fill Snape Maltings every August. Plan a Christmas night out at the "rock ‘n' roll" pantomime at Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre.

Public Holidays

New Year's Day, Good Friday (Mar/Apr), Easter Monday (Mar/Apr), May Day Bank Holiday (first Mon of May), Spring Bank Holiday (last Mon of May), August Bank Holiday (last Mon in Aug), Christmas Day (25 Dec), Boxing Day (26 Dec).

Weather

With it's flat, eastern location and proximity to the North Sea, winters can be chilly, with occasional snow. Suffolk in bloom – as epitomised by Constable's pictures – shows how pleasant the area can be in spring, summer and autumn. Expect warm temperatures from May to August (16°C – 25°C), perhaps even warmer, although there is always a chance of rain.

Electricity

240V AC, 50 Hz, three-pin plugs are standard.

Dialling Code

+44 (national), (0) 1473 + six-figure number (Ipswich).

Fit In

Wear country tweeds (wool was the mainstay of East Anglia's medieval economy) and good walking shoes (hiking or Wellington boots) for the land; sailor's cap and waterproofs for the water. A jaunty swagger is optional, naturally.

Highlights

Highlights

Constable country, pebble beaches, Suffolk churches and a modern waterfront make Ipswich an ideal location from which to explore the county.

Ipswich is full of churches, some – like St Stephen's, now the Tourist Information Centre – no longer used for worship. North of the town centre explore the time-line of Ipswich's history in Christchurch Mansion. The more recent history of Ipswich can be traced via its vehicles at the Ipswich Transport Museum and geography and natural history at the Ipswich Museum. For Dark-Age mystery visit Sutton Hoo burial site at Woodbridge.

Take a boat trip along the river Orwell, east of the city, with the graceful Orwell Bridge spanning the estuary. Along the banks discover fine walks and even finer pubs before heading back to follow Ipswich Town from the terraces at Portman Road ground.

Sightseeing Tips

Take time to view for free the impressive collection of Gainsboroughs and early Constables (the largest collection outside London) at Wolsey Art Gallery, part of Christchurch Mansion.
