Overview

Overview

Colorado is a microcosm of the North American ski scene with everything from glitzy Aspen to family-friendly Copper Mountain, all within easy reach of Denver.

In Resort

Colorado was the first state to market its skiing internationally and is still by far the most popular with international visitors. There is a real variety of resorts: for a real flavour of the Wild West try Breckenridge; nearby car-free, purpose-built Beaver Creek is upmarket and Copper Mountain has been transformed from ugly duckling to beautiful swan.

On Piste

Take your pick from beautifully groomed and well-maintained pistes, twisting trails that run through the trees and high-mountain bowls above the tree-line. Vail is particularly popular for piste-cruising, though it can get crowded.

Off Piste

The champagne powder is so dry that even when it melts and re-freezes the moisture seems to be sucked out of it.

Freestyle

The freestyle scene is big. Until 2001, boarding was banned in Aspen but the turnaround has been spectacular: it now regularly hosts the Winter X games and the terrain parks are state-of-the-art.

Mountain Eats

Eating out here may be a bit of a disappointment if you're more used to the variety and charm of the Alps. Instead, expect lodges selling burgers, stir fries, pizzas and the like.

Après-ski

There is a good night-time scene in many Colorado resorts. Breckenridge is a party town and Aspen has a buzz and ample opportunities for celebrity-spotting.

Spas and Sports

Good spa facilities, souvenir shopping, hot-air balloon rides and snowmobiling widen the holiday experience in Breckenridge. For climbing and dog-sledding, go to Vail.

Expedition

Close to many of the Colorado resorts is the cut-price factory outlet Silverthorne. Practically every high-street store has a vast outlet selling clothes at ludicrously knockdown prices.

Prepare

Prepare

Cold fronts in the Rockies have to be felt in the bones to be believed so pack warm. Stetsons can be bought on arrival.

Colorado Winter

Vail hosts two weeks of concerts and events at the Vail Snow Daze (Dec) and in January world-class skiers, riders, Moto X and snowmobilers head for Aspen for the Winter X games. Sculptors get to work at the Snow Sculpture Championships in Breckenridge (Jan) and the streets come to life in Copper Mountain with Mardi Gras (Feb). Take some tips from the Colorado Free Skiing Championships on Snowmass Mountain in Aspen (Mar) and tuck in to the Taste of Vail Festival (Apr).

Public Holidays

New Year's Day (1 Jan), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Jan), Washington's Birthday (Feb), Memorial Day (May), Independence Day (4 July), Labour Day (Sep), Columbus Day (Oct), Veterans' Day (12 Nov), Thanksgiving Day (Nov), Christmas Day.

Weather

Ski season weather in the Rockies ranges from -35°C to +10°C. By May, you can drop the thermals and facemasks in favour of cowboy hats and lumberjack shirts.

Electricity

110-120V AC, 60Hz, two- (flat) or three- (two flat and one round) pin plugs are standard.

Dialling Code

+ 1 (national), 970 + seven-figure number.

Money

The US dollar (US$) is the currency.

Strange but true

In the 1890s, boom town Aspen provided one-sixth of the country's silver, published six newspapers and was home to 12,000 residents. When skiing came along in the 1930s, there were only 700.
