Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Hi Lolo I'm in the same situation as you, I am flying with Onur air this friday and am having nightmares already. I don't think it matters which airline you take as they all have incidents like the one mentioned my flymiles. I was involved in a depresurisation last year on a jet 2 flight from Ibiza and it has really frightened me to the point where I am taking medication for this flight, however.....the comments that flymiles made were not necessarily accurate and I did notice that he was not on the flight himself. Im my experience...yes I thought the oxygen masks were not working (and actually swapped mine for a spare)....and there was a smell of burning however as the cabin crew explained, this is the chemical reaction for making the oxygen. The pilot explained to us that we needed to come down to 10,000 feet to be at a "safe" height to breath normally and descended 20,000 feet in approx 5 mins (this definately feels wrong!) when we were at a safe height, the cabin crew came around with their oxygen bottles and reassured people before making a speedy landing in barcelona. I too am really worried about the safety reputation of onur air and have been researching the internet for information...onur air has not had any fatalities since 1970 which makes me feel slightly better however I do not feel better about the whole flying experience anyway.

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Hi Lolo & kim S just wanted to let you know that we returned from Turkey last Friday (the 13th !!!) after having a wonderful holiday and assure your both that both our outbound and inbound flight with ONUR air was great. OK it's a budget airline so you don't get any frills, the plane looked a bit tatty but we found both flights fine, staff were lovely it was a bit strange to hear everything in turkish first and then in English but all was fine. Before we went i too was a little nervous after reading various articles but it was all OK., i travelled with Easy Jet in September and can't find any differences between the two. i would definitely fly with both companies again.

If the airplane landed ok then what was the problem, I think you would benefit from flying lessons as you would have a more considered idea of what happened instead of a knee jerk "we're all going to die " reaction. In hindsight perhaps the crew could have been more informative but if their English was limited perhaps they didn't know how to explain what had happened. Reading through these forums there is one woman who seems genuinely afraid to fly as a result of items like yours and that's a real shame, flying is a wonderful experience

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
its understandable for someone who knows nothing or very little about airline procedures in such an event, and the effects this would have on passengers and their view of the events. You say the aircraft plummeted as many people have already said, it is a controlled rapid descent to an altitude where the air is breathable, if he descended at the rate they would do when descending for landing you would probly have another "Helios" accident. Aswell as many people have said this type of incident is more common than you would expect. From my experience OnurAir are quite a reputable Turkish airline, i work at NCL airport and see their aircraft on a daily basis and i have no reason to doubt their maintenence schedules are no different to that of any airline, in fact the majority of the aircraft look to be in better condition than most of easyJets!! As for the crew on board they are there for your safety not your mental wellbehing, they did their job ensureing you were safe on the aircraft and when exiting the aircraft.

I am not a journalist and I had friends on this flight. I flew with onur air a couple of times the previous week! Not good either. All these bad flights cannot be a coincidence. Can't be a Coincedence HA, so the 3 emergency landing Quantas had in the one month were not coincidence, its all just bad timing accept it. What sense is there in an airlines taking shortcuts in their maintenence?, yes its happened in the past to the airlines peril, all of which faced massive fines from the governing aviation authority and a mass of bad publicity in the media 2 things no airline would want!!

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
I have just returned from a 7-day trip to Turkey, flying both ways with Onur Air. Frankly, nothing of great significance to complain about! Outward flight from Birmingham was about 30 minutes late leaving, and the return from Bodrum was about 3 hours late. Bodrum airport is not one of the best I've seen - it is small, the general level of service from the airport staff isn't great, and the "cafe/shop" is a rip-off - but that's not Onur Air's fault! Outbound, the aircraft was definitely old, and inside the cabin showed signs of poor cosmetic maintenance (including my seat, which was not the most comfortable!) but there was no problem with the take-off, the flight, or the landing. Inbound, the aircraft was a pretty new one, and again, no problem with the take-off or the flight. The descent was bumpy (descending though British cloud on a wet and miserable British summer's day) - but again, this is not the airline's fault, and actually the landing itself was very smooth following the bumpy ride down. Both out and in we were in Airbus 321's. Onur Air are a budget airline offering budget fares - less than £200 return direct to Bodrum if you look carefully.. If you want premium airline quality and service, go pay BA/Turkish Airlines fares at £600-£900 for the same journey, but with a stopover in Istanbul!
But safety is really not an issue, IMHO. Onur Air aircraft are no more likely to crash than pretty much any other European airline's, and actually less likely than some. And flying is STILL the safest form of travel, regardless. You are many times more likely to have a fatal accident in your car on the way to the airport than you are once you are in the aircraft.

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Just back from a week in Bodrum, flew from glasgow on 31 of august, outbound flight was fine. But on our return flight which was on the 7th of September 2008, as we were taking off, a strange noise was coming from one of the engines. Once we were in the air the captain informed us there was a problem with the engine. We then circled the airport for about an hour and a half to reduce the amount of fuel on board. We then landed back at bodrum, i think the captain glided us in as when he was putting the engine in full throttle, the noise was alot worse. I'm not an expert so my explanation might not be what really happened as we were not informed what was wrong with the engine. We were then given another plane which had no problems. To be honest i was worried during it and it didnt help when all the air hostesses were all hiding behind the curtain at the front of the plane, not showing face to the passengers.

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Hiya, Just to let people know who will be flying with Onur Air, I have today Wednesday 10th September 2008 just returned from Icemeler, turkey with Onur Air, this is the third year running we have travelled with them and have always had great flights, no problems whatsoever. I have been abroad for over 30 years and hate flying, but this airline is very good.

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Im really scared of flying and have had some bad flights in the past so wasnt best happy when i found out after booking a last minute holiday with teletext that we were flying with Onur air. I should learn to not research things on the net sometimes as im sure alot of things are blown out of proportion.
I completely understand that flying is the safest way to travel and the odds of dying on a plane are far less than road traffic accidents etc... guess it still doesnt make me feel better.. probably because we are up in the air and there is nothing you can do about it. After reading the comments on here, i must admit that a couple have really unnerved me and i seriously want to cancel my flight with ONUR AIR, but its too expensive to book with anyone else and i fly sunday night (night flights scare me even more).
What I am most concerned about is how they were banned from landing in a few european air ports and why? does this happen frequently? surely something must of been seriously wrong for this to happen?
I am still going to go on holiday sunday and fly with Onur Air but am so worried i feel like something bad is going to happen... although in reality I know this is a stupid way to feel.
I am pleased to read some more positive comments on here though which have made me feel slightly more relaxed... I know that its not the plane company that is unsafe and that the incidents that happen are just as likely to happen to any plane not only Onur air, but they do have seroiusly bad press... has anyone got any more insite on to why they were banned and if their safety standards really are that bad?
Thanks

Re: ONUR AIR FLIGHT OHY 619 September 7th 2007 - Near Disaster
Hiya, I've always been frightened of flying, but take it from one frightened person to another, You have nothing to fear with Onur Air. As I stated previously I have flown with them before, and this year, as usual, they were excellent. On the return journey, there were a few places left on the plane, and after take off, the air stewards, told us we could spread out if we wanted to, as it was a night flight, my husband and a couple of others, spread out and lay down on a couple of seats. My uncle was with us who is 75 years old, and has never flown before, this was his first time, and he enjoyed it, the air stewards were lovely and looked after him. As for safety standards, they do all the checks as the same as other airlines I have flown with, and the safety is just the same. I have always had 100% from Onur Air, and we have already booked with them for next year for 2 weeks again to turkey. You honestly have nothing to worry about.By the way, the seats were leather, and also the drinks were expensive. We recommend before you board, to buy some drinks, pop, mineral water, or minatures alcohol, to take on with you. Why they have bad press, I do not know, and could not honestly comment. I am 51 years old, frightened of flying, but would fly with Onur Air anytime. Hope this helps you, have a good flight and a good holiday.
