Re using a debit card in Australia, I have been to Australia 4 times and only on the first time did I take travellers cheques. Quite easy to change for cash using an Australian bank and taking passport along as identification.

The last three times I have taken some cash, just so I can get through the first few days and then have used a Hole in the wall.

As for communicating I used my mobile (vodafone) rarely but i believe that they have just abolished roaming charges so phoning from abroad should cost the same as a call made in the U.k ( you may need to check on this)

I visit NSW each year and would like to see more of Australia. Could anyone offer me advice about bus and rail travel. Which route is worth doing? Has anyone experienced Perth to Sydney?

Hi just seen this message, I have done Perth to Sydney on the Indian Pacific back in 2000 and did the Ghan Adelaide to Darwin in 2007, both really great journreys if i had to choose 1 to do again it would be the indian pacific. I beleive it takes about 65 hours to do which seems like a long time to be on a train, but what a way to see the country. Not sure what level of service you are looking for we went first class which i now think they call gold kangeroo class. all meals are included in the price. The cabins are quite good, double cabins have bunk beds which are made up when you go for dinner, and the beds are putaway when you are at breakfast. first class cabins also have ensuite toilet and showe facilities, showering on a train can be a bit of fun as the train rocks from side to side. The train stops at a few places and quite often you can book a coach tour of the town where you have stopped, Kalgoorlie, Cook, Adelaide, Broken hill (Cook is so small that it is a walking tour)
