thanks. I've looked at Monarch website but it says you can only book premium through tour operator. You can book seats together and extra legroom on website but by the sound of it this may not be straightforward with a child -also doesn't cost much less than if booking premium (and you don't get all the extras!)

Oh dear, things may not be as easy as you think. If you look at the Monarch website you can find seat plans of the A330 which I expect will be the plane you are taking, if the flight is shown as direct it will be, if it stops in the Middle East, it might be something smaller. The problem with the A330 is that the extra legroom seats are located next to the Emergency Exits and CAA Regulations do not allow children under 15 to occupy those seats. This means most, if not all, those seats will not be available to you.

Back problems and charter seats are not a good mix, whilst the tour operator might not have been willing to sell you a premium seat, the airline might be, you can go through the website and contact them to see if they will sell them to you direct. If not, the seats are around 30 inches in pitch, not the worst in the air, but not the best either.

    monarch seating -flight to Mombassa

I will be taking my first long haul flight in August -the airline is Monarch and I have seen mainly dreadful reviews. I am mostly concerned about the seat pitch as I have back problems and the thought of being squashed in an uncomfortable seat for 8 hours overnight could cause problems which would ruin my holiday. I enquired about a premium upgrade but was told by the travel agent this wasn't available on the 1 week holidays only the 2 week. I desperately want to ensure that I have sufficient leg room and also that my 12 year old daughter and I can sit together. I know I can contact the airline before the hol to book extra legroom (if available) but now I'm hearing that particular seats have their own drawbacks eg reduced seat width or next to the toilets -so you could pay extra and still have an uncomfortable flight. Can anyone give some general advice?

    thanks
