    BEWARE booking a holiday on-line

Last October i searched online for a hoiday to turkey, after finding what i was looking for i proceeded to book online with REGAL HOLIDAYS. After completing the credit card payment a screen came up and told me to ring for confirmation of booking, giving me a reference number. This was due to the fact that it was only a few days before the flight.

I was told the package was not available because the flights were sold out. They offered an alternative but i had to check with the rest of the group this was suitable, so Regal Holidays said they would ring me back the following morning. They didn't so i rang them. I told them the alternative flights were acceptable, only to be informed that the accomodation was not available. I could have the original accommodation i wanted for 10 nights but would then have to move for the remaining 4 days.

By this time i was fed up and told them to forget it. I booked the holiday i wanted with a different company straight after.

The day before our fight i received an invoice from Regal Holidays saying we had paid for the holiday £1400.00, which they had taken from my credit card. We rang Regal Holidays straight away to tell them they had made a mistake because we had already booked our holiday, which they told us was unavailable, with another company. We were passed from one person to another and eventually told to ring from Turkey the next day. I told them all i wanted them to do was refund the money.

As you can imagine we got nowhere with them. We phoned the bank to get the payment stopped but they couldn't do anything. Having now paid for 2 holidays on the credit card, this made our holiday strained becaused we were at our limit.

After lots of phone calls and letters we find that we are £1400.00 out of pocket because Regal Holidays say we confirmed the booking ,even though when they took payment for my booking it was a none existant holiday. They say we confirmed booking of an alternate holiday over the phone, but we did not. We told them to forget it! Trying to get the bank to sort it under the credit act hasn't worked either. Regal Holidays sent them a fax saying we confirmed booking on the phone. The bank says its our word against theirs, there isn't anything they can do.

We can't afford to take it to court ourselves, so BEWARE !!!! RING AND CHECK THE HOLIDAY IS AVAILABLE BEFORE ENTERING YOUR CREDIT CARD DETAILS.

    Hi,

You do have rights, you paid by credit card and contracted with Regal and they did not provide you with what your ordered therefore they have to give you the choice of a refund or alternative. Not sure of your full circumstances but if you confirmed in writing or by email that you were not prepared to accept the alternative and they still took the money from your credit card then you have rights under your credit card.

You credit card company have some responsibility under the credit consumer act, if they do not help you seek the assistance of the FSO http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/.

    Good luck

Hi, I find the best way is to book a DIY holiday, booking your flights, accommodation and travel insurance separately. Get you travel insurance quote from travelsupermarket.com website as they get cheap rates because of there bulk buying power (roughly cost £15 for 4 people for 2 weeks in Europe). Doing it DIY means you choose when you want to fly and the type of accomodation is endless. you get some really nice apartments with pool, air conditioning, shower/bath, fridge/freezer, cooker etc. For my family it's really essential we have pool and air conditioning for the 2 weeks!

I went to Benalmadena in Spain recently and paid £1050 (£75 return each for flights and £750 for apartment with pool, air con etc) for 4 people (me, wife and 2 kids age 13 and 8) including flights and apartment for 2 weeks but you might pay a little bit more in July / August. The only downside is you have to arrange your own transfers when you arrive at your airport but I've never found that to be a problem as I've got a taxi which are always cheap for 4 people with luggage so unless you are going to Mongolia this shouldn't be a problem.

I've been arranging my holiday this way for the last 5 years as like you I've been let down in the past by companies similar to Regal holidays (Golden Sun let me down 9 years ago!!! Ironically they have now gone bust)

Book your flights separately through one of these companies below to get cheapest prices:

Then rent your apartment or villa through one of these websites as I've used these before (or any other company you find on the internet that rents out apartments/villa)
