another very very good hotel I had the pleasure of visiting was the Hilton in Brussels,3 nights last year.

nice rooms and rafinate environment,and the chambermaid was absolutly fantastic,it was a man and looked exacly like Freddy Mercury,never laughed so much;now you know:he's not dead, he simply changed job.

I think that's the comprehensive list for great hotels right there:

- friendly staff
- big, modern and comfortable rooms
- fantastic value for money

I'd add that they should be in a great location and have some great facilities like a fabulous pool, too. I think you've hit the nail on the head with the other really important part: the cost of getting there. It could be the best hotel in the world, but if it's impossible or far too expensive to get to, it's never going to be a great place to stay!

friendly staff,the hotel was recently totally refurbished(it was bilt in the '60s ),big rooms with large balconies,and fantastic value for money:went there last 2 weeks of Sept 08 with ASDA travel,paid for a double room 2 people all inc(including as much wine and beer as you wanted,you simply helped yourself) £44/day,the flight with Ryanair to Alicante was about £30pp return

It's a very good question, Hampel - no doubt about it. But why is the Sol Y Sombra so good? What sorts of things make a your favourite?
