Romantic breaks can be the most amazing and memorable experiences to share with the person you love. Trips away with your partner can help to maintain the spontaneity between couples who live in each other’s pockets, or spark a deeper connection between couples in the earlier dating stages. The topic of where to visit is often where problems occur though – after all you want the trip to be perfect right? Often a trip to say Paris however, can send your bank account into the red. Finding cheap eateries and bars is like finding a needle in a haystack; Bruges however is arguably one of the most charming cities in Europe without the extortionate price tags.
Some couples love nothing more than to sit in a bar, sipping a delicious locally brewed beer and enjoying one another’s company. Bruges is definitely the city for couples to kick back and enjoy a beer in – the pubs are so incredibly cosy and their unique designs are quirky yet incredibly homely! The beers are second to none too, with 8% mind blowers for the braver half of the relationship (try a Duvel, which translates as The Devil) or a fruit beer if you fancy a mellower beverage. There are so many flavours to try and strengths vary from 2% to 5% generally.
Bruges is great for couples as it doesn’t have the rowdiness that say, Amsterdam has. With this in mind, you’ll struggle to find night clubs in Bruges, but if you’re satisfied with cosy yet vibrant bars you won’t be disappointed.
Bruges is famous for its medieval architecture which has remained untouched for centuries. The combination of Bruges’ architecture, combined with its winding canal which snakes through the centre is what truly makes it so unbelievably romantic. Whether you enjoy strolling hand-in-hand with your partner whilst taking in the architectural beauty or love photograph opportunities, Bruges is a city built for romance. I highly recommend taking a stroll early on a Sunday morning, Bruges is an incredibly religious place and so you will only have to share the small city with a few other tourists before noon. When the church bells finally ring out, Bruges comes to live and feels like an entirely different place.
During the winter months, Bruges has such a welcoming atmosphere. There’s a pleasant buzz to the place, it isn’t too overwhelming like its Dutch neighbours of Amsterdam, but there’s definitely a vibrant atmosphere. The Christmas markets are also a common reason why people visit Bruges, and if you’re a fan of ice skating you’ll be pleased to know an ice rink is erected in the main square. Bruges is a truly magical place in the winter months; expect hot wines by a blustering fire in the traditional Belgian taverns.
If you’re someone who loves to collect memorabilia, Bruges is definitely a great place to visit. Chocolate lovers can enjoy piling cocoa-filled treats into their luggage, sharing Belgian chocolate whilst watching a romantic movie when you get back to the UK is all part of the holiday! There’s also some quite humorous chocolate sculptures to take home, my personal favourite being the chocolate boobs; available in white, milk and dark chocolate! The beer shop is definitely worth a visit too, the walls are just completely filled with different bottled Belgain beers neatly coupled with their branded speciality glasses.
Getting to Bruges from the UK is incredibly easy, with flights to Ostend Bruges International Airport which leaves you a mere 15 miles from the Bruges city centre. One of my favourite ways to get there however, is via ferry. P&O offer a mini-cruise crossing from Hull which allows you to choose up to 2 nights stay in Bruges, or just spend the day there if you wish. The mini-cruise is great, as the overnight ferry crossing can be incorporated as part of your break with the on-board entertainment. The ferry takes you to Zeebrugge and from there, an hour coach journey is provided to get you to Bruges city centre. Standing on the deck of the ferry as you set sail into the sunset can also be a romantic addition to the break of your dreams.
Stephanie Staszko writes for MF Airport Parking who provide parking at all the UK’s major airports. Steph particularly enjoys Bruges in the wintertime with her partner due to its cosiness, but mainly she goes for the beers!
