This school term date travel hack could help families (or anyone who wants to go away during the school holidays, for that matter) shave nearly a half off their holiday price this summer. By flying from an airport with lower demand, where children are either yet to break up or have gone back to school at the end of August, you can save as much as 49%.
For example, Leicestershire schools break up a week before most this year, meaning there are trips Lanzarote from under £250pp to be had – but, the week after when other schools have broken up, the price of the same holiday soars by as much as 95%.
Leicestershire schools break up on July 13. So, families can fly away that weekend or the week up to July 19 for some brilliantly low prices. Demand is much less, with most schools in Derbyshire, the West Midlands, the North West and South East open until at least July 21 or even later in the case of Nottinghamshire (July 26).
This means Leicestershire families don’t even have to travel far to take advantage of bargain prices. They can fly from virtually anywhere in England including airports incredibly close to them, such as Birmingham and the East Midlands, for less.
In the deal below, you can see holidays from as cheap as £244pp. Just a week later, when many other schools in the Midlands have broken up, the price of the same holiday starts from £476pp.
After August 20, Scottish children start a new term. So, people in the north of England - for example, in Cumbria and Northumberland or even Manchester (if you don’t mind the 3.5 hour drive to Glasgow airport) - can take advantage of good holiday package prices from Scottish airports in the last week of August, when Scottish schools have started their new term.
We found deals for as little as £245pp from Scotland, while the same trip from Newcastle (where school is still in) would set you back £474pp, making the drive well worth the savings.
With Scottish children having already started their summer holiday, families north of the border can venture to England to find some better holiday prices. For example, from Newcastle (holidays start in the North East from July 21), there are some great deals to Corfu to be had.
In fact, Corfu features in the top three most-affordable package holiday destinations from the UK this summer (Spanish duo Costa Brava and Costa Dorada are the other two), according to TravelSupermarket search data.
From nearby Newcastle, there are deals for £233pp, while in Scotland, that same holiday will set you back £351pp.
Even if you don’t live in one of the areas mentioned above, there are still ways to get a cheaper holiday during the summer. For example, pick a destination where your money goes a lot further, and where the cost of eating out, drinks and activities is lower. You should also look for places where the exchange rates are good.
Sunny Beach in Bulgaria or resorts such as Icmeler, Kusadasi, Antalya or Marmaris in Turkey are good examples. Or, check out the Algarve, the best value area for a beach holiday within the Eurozone.
Also, if you want to get the best value holiday this summer, our site pricing data shows that the first and last weeks of your child’s school holidays are normally when you can find the most affordable breaks. Also, if you’re able to be flexible on when you go, compare different days in the week; the lowest-priced deals will often depart mid-week at unsociable hours.
