With year-round sun and an African flavour to your holiday, it makes an excellent and cheap place to visit...
The Gambia enjoys sunny weather all year but is most pleasant for tourists from November to July. Holidaymakers choose the Gambia for its beautiful beaches, world class resorts and laidback living. The Gambia is on Greenwich Mean Time and is also English speaking country making it an easy place for UK tourists to visit.
International flights arrive at Banjul Yundum International Airport (BJL). Once you've arrived in Gambia car hire is available from the airport as well as downtown locations close to the resorts. The island of Banjul, Gambia's capital, is a 40 minute drive from the airport.
City highlights include the old town with the shops and stalls of Albert Market and Arch 22, a textile museum which offers excellent views across the capital and beyond. Many hotels are located on the gorgeous Banjul Beach. To the south of Banjul lies the Tanbi Wetlands, a vast reserve where monkeys and other wildlife can be spotted.
The main resort areas of Kololi, Kotu and Cape Point are all nearby and run along the Atlantic coast to the west of Banjul. From the airport the main resort areas can be reached in 30 minutes by car. Popular hotels in the area include the Bakau African Village and the Senegambia.
When hiring a car it's advisable to choose a 4x4 as minor roads are not paved, this also gives you the opportunity to explore the country at large.

Away from the tropical beaches there is much to see and do, and highlights include Abuko Nature Reserve and a trip down the Gambian River itself...
Abuko Nature Reserve is a twenty minute drive from the main resort areas around Bakau and is the home to a huge range of wildlife including crocodiles and monkeys. Alternatively, the Makastu Nature Reserve is located further inland along the river and is a beautifully dense forest where visitors can see vultures, mongoose and baboons.
One of the best ways to see the real Gambia is to take a boat tour along the famous Gambia River. This is an ideal location to indulge in bird spotting, with many species not seen in Northern Europe on offer.
The country is encompassed by Senegal and day trips by ferry to Senegal are another must-do holiday activity. They can be easily arranged with your hire car, but check for any limitations from your rental company before taking your vehicle into the neighbouring country.
