Why go?

Visitors flock to Livingstone, in the south of Zambia, to marvel at the thundering beauty of the Victoria Falls. Book car hire in Livingstone to travel around this magical part of Africa at your leisure...

Of course, the undisputed star attraction of Livingstone is the nearby Victoria Falls. The mighty Zambezi twists and turns its way towards Livingstone, forming a natural boundary between Zambia and its neighbour Zimbabwe, to the south. Just minutes after the water passes the town, it suddenly drops more than 100 exhilarating metres at an average speed of 1,000 metres per second. These plummeting waters throw out misty rainbows across the two-kilometre span of the falls and leave onlookers totally dumbfounded. It is one of nature's truly great spectacles and you could be there within just 10 minutes by road from the centre of Livingstone.

There are a number of ways to view Victoria Falls, with most allowing the pure spectacle of the falls to raise the heart rate. However, daredevils can - in the drier months - swim to the edge of the falls in what is known as the Devil's Pool and peer out over the sheer drop. In fact, daredevils are very well catered for in and around Livingstone. Those who dare can bungee jump, bodyboard on the rapids, go white-water rafting, or ride the Zambezi swing.

Elsewhere in Livingstone, the former capital of the Southern Province of Zambia, those who prefer a little less adrenaline coursing through their veins can hop aboard the delightful Royal Livingstone Express for a dining experience from the glorious age of steam trains. The Railway Museum in Livingstone is also worth a look.

This being a major tourist centre, there are plenty of western-style pubs, restaurants and bars, as well as a great range of accommodation, from backpacker digs to luxurious lodges.

Having a car makes it easy to get around. You can collect your rental car at Livingstone's Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI), just a few minutes north-west of town, or pick up your vehicle at a downtown location in Livingstone. Where to explore?

When you arrange car rental, Livingstone can also be a gateway to other destinations in Africa...

Zambia is a vast nation, so unless you are gearing up for a road trip of epic proportions, don't expect a drive to the northern reaches of the nation to be easy (it would take around 24 hours of continual motoring across this often rugged terrain to go from south to north).

Livingstone is fairly isolated in the Southern Province and many visitors fly in simply to see the incredible Victoria Falls before flying out again. However, there are some nearby adventures to be had if you rent a car in Livingstone.

The nearest place to see Africa's wildlife is Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, to which you can drive in less than 20 minutes from Livingstone. Running alongside the Zambezi, it's a very small park but it's packed with rhino, elephant, wild dogs, zebra, giraffe and a wide variety of birds - you can drive through yourself or join a guided tour.

The southern reaches of the vast Kafue National Park can be reached in around three to four hours from Livingstone on a good network of roads. It is the largest of Zambia's parks and home to many animals. You'll arrive from Livingstone at the Dundumwezi Gate, where you will find some lodging options.
