Newcastle and neighbouring Gateshead are brill for shopping, football, culture and nightlife. Antony Gormley’s awesome Angel of the North statue dominates the skyline just outside the cities. In the city centre, check out the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and, while you’re there, take in the iconic view of the River Tyne and its seven bridges from the level five viewing box.
The North Sea coastline is some of the most beautiful in the world, edged by nature reserves, sandy beaches and brooding castles. Inland, Northumberland National Park delivers red squirrels, some of the best stargazing in Europe, and Roman history so alive you can reach out and touch it at Hadrian’s Wall. Potter heads can ape their hero at Alnwick Castle, which was used in the Harry Potter films and Downton Abbey.
Once you’re able to tear yourself away, Newcastle’s Port of Tyne is a fabulous starting point for cruises heading north. 14km (nine miles) from Newcastle city centre and easily reached from the A1(M), the Port of Tyne International Passenger Terminal has top-notch road and rail connections. Newcastle Central Station is 15 minutes by car or taxi, and some cruise lines provide a shuttle bus. The nearest Metro station is Percy Main, a 25-minute walk. Newcastle International Airport is around 30 minutes by road.
When you arrive, you’ll find a big, comfortable passenger lounge with a café, licensed bar, cash machine for local and foreign currencies, and long and short-term parking facilities a few minutes’ walk from the terminal. Before you shell out for parking, make sure you get the cheapest deal and check with your cruise line to see if they’ve negotiated special parking rates for their customers. You don’t have to pre-book parking, making last-minute cruises even easier.
