Hundreds of cruises depart from Southampton’s natural deep-water harbour every year, making this historic port the UK’s principle cruise departure point. You’ll find ships setting off on epic Transatlantic cruises to New York, to Iceland, the Azores, the Netherlands, Norway, Dubai, Morocco, France, Spain, Italy, Canada, the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and on voyages to Ireland or around the British Isles.
The Port of Southampton has four cruise terminals: QEII and Ocean are in the Eastern Docks, Mayflower and City are in the Western Docks. Reaching them is easy. The port’s transport links are exceptional, making cruises from Southampton especially popular with the British no-fly cruise crowd.
The easiest way to get to the Port of Southampton is by road. The port is close to the motorway system, via the M27, and Southampton city centre. AB Parking offers long-term terminal parking for many cruise lines, with optional Meet & Greet and shuttle services. It’s best to book in advance but if you’ve bagged yourself a last-minute cruise it is possible to pay for parking on the day. There are also short-stay carparks and drop-off areas outside the terminals.
The nearest train station is Southampton Central, which is well served by local and national services. Depending on which dock your cruise leaves from, it’s one to two miles from the station to the port. Taxis depart from just outside the station.
Southampton, the port’s nearest airport, is just 6km (four miles) from the city centre and frequent trains link Southampton Airport Parkway to Southampton Central in the city centre. Buses and taxis are also available.
Make your cruise experience even more chilled by booking somewhere to stay nearby before your ship sails – you’ll avoid any last-minute rush and stroll on board stress-free. Find a hotel with a view of the port so you can watch your ship – and the hundreds of others crisscrossing Southampton’s harbour – berth before you board. Many hotels and guesthouses in Southampton offer excellent park, stay and cruise packages, which include a shuttle, taxi or chauffeur transfer to your cruise terminal.
Of course, one of the best things about cruising from Southampton is that your holiday begins as soon as you park your car and climb on board. No airports or hire cars to deal with, just a well-oiled cruising machine! Play your cards right and bag a great-value last-minute package, and you’ll find cruising can be one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to holiday.
